How many fish can live in my tank?

Nitrates will accumulate in the tank no matter which filter you choose. It isn't something that is directly filtered out -- this is the main reason why even an established tank needs regular water changes. I'm not saying that a good filter is useless (it's not!), just that it doesn't prevent nitrate buildup specifically.

Okay guys, I'm back and I need a little help here. I went to the lfs a few days ago, went nuts and bought a beautiful comet who is at least 7 inches long (I know kill me later) but I also saw some beautiful little inch long blood red and white comets in the feeder tank.

My only problem is that I'm afraid to put him in the tank and the others end up eating him, how fast will he grow? I could possible keep him in a container of some sort until he grows big enough to compete with the others? I don't have enough money for a new tank setup as I'm almost to my goal saved at getting my 75 gal (*crosses fingers for the second week in October*)

Oh I think I just thought of my own answer to my problem, could I use one of those breeder nets to keep him in the tank but out of the reach of the bigger fish? The nets around here are around 7 inches on.

Don't forget to keep an eye on Craigslist for your area.....might come across a 75 in good shape that way, and save you some bucks towards the filters or what have you.

oh what does Melafix smell like? My aunt had some left in her tank when she let me use it, my big comet has some really bad fin tears from the man handling at the store, I figured this would help him heal faster. When I shook it and smelled it though, it has a strong...well anti-bacteria smell to it and made bubbles on the top of my tank.

Thanks, I'll be sure to get some pictures of Poe ( the new comet) when I get a chance. I've never used the stuff before so I just wanted to make sure.
