Well, I see 2 possibles, far left low & far right almost midtank? That's my best guess tonight...
You got it! They're so tiny lol

Well, they're looking more & more like an apisto (or any cichlid) pair!! Fins, coloring & behavior! I see eggs in their future, soon 👍

I think fish the fish is getting an early start on skeleton Halloween costuming, lol. I think her name should be bones. I'm guessing she's a girl cory since she's bigger & has a bit of "tummy" ...but I would not be surprised if that dark yellow tummy, big tail means male...I'm hedging my bets, lol!

Oops will always be hilarious! You know I'm not a huge fan of variants but he is really funny with his giant fins! I think we're agreed he's a male, right? How else could a fish have such long/high fins & skinny/small body? I can't imagine him turning out to be female...but "he's" also young, I never say never...I've been wrong before, lol.

Oops is really funny, I'm fussy on long finned fish, mostly because most cases it affects their swimming (minus BN plecos, they don't seem bothered by it, and fancy goldfish already have issues swimming). But the fact that I went out of my way to avoid *unnatural coloured* fish for this setup and somehow ended up with a longfin cory cracks me up. But yeah I'm fairly sure Oops is male, very slim body.

I think I have a female heavy group of paleatus, which works out that at least one of the unrelated fish is male. Even if he's longfin. But yeah, Fish the cory is female. Paleatus are easiest told by shape and dorsal fin. Females do get chunkier, but they have rounded dorsal fins in comparison to the male dorsal fin. But females also get almost a whole inch longer than males in body size once mature. I know their mother was nearly 3 inches long, she was big.

The apistos have settled in, they get along well, follow each other sometimes, forage separately other times. Not bothered by their tankmates and they haven't so much as pecked at anyone (besides snails). I know that can definitely change should the female be defending eggs and fry, however, but I think the outcome works out, outside of that situation.

We were just discussing Oops' gender, well can be confirmed he's a boy any further, he's attempting T-positions now too lol
1000126771.jpg

Added new plants to this setup, did some digging on inaturalist, encyclopedia of life, etc and looked at report maps for some confirmation of certain plants in the region of Rio Paraguay, Rio Parana, and Mato Grosso (all the fish except the chaetostoma are from this region).

So picked up some more pogostemon g a y i (love I have to put spaces on this name or else it censors it lol) and some bacopa australis.

G a y i
I have it scattered in a few places.

Australis, a bit beat up from being shipped but it's a lovely plant. Softer in texture than other bacopas. I hope it does well because I don't do great with caroliniana or monnieri.

And tank pic
1000126930.jpg

Just really liked this pic

The fish really love the wood arch, they spend a lot of time around it. Cories and tetras. The borelli are all over the tank I find, they like the swords a lot.

This will be 2 posts, because I got too many cory pics this time.

Plants are filling in, including the new bacopa australis. Which is great because I kill every other kind of bacopa lol

It's like the apistos flipped a switch. The female is more skulky and likes to stay hidden while the male is out and about now. He goes right blue when he tries to impress the lady (could still be a sleeper male, but until proven, I'll call a lady)

The missus.

Male, who is not bothered whatsoever by the cories and will join them at food time.

And one of the lady plecos during food time. They come out a lot now during the day now, and for sure always out when there's food. All have put on weight as well.

And baby cories. Which aren't really babies anymore, they're juveniles but hitting puberty lol

Oops and his ridiculous fins

Acorn caps have been a great botanical addition to this tank just for this reason.

Fish, the lady with the fish shaped spot on her side

They're almost reaching the 2 inch mark in some of them, counting the tail.

So many good pics! It seems like the apistos are still hanging out together? Or at least not aggressive chasing by the pretty male? I wish the smaller 1 showed more yellow...I'm having a few doubts...

Did you hide a treat in that acorn cap? That pic cracked me up :D

The "female" likes the left side of the tank around the ceramic log I had in there for the plecos (that they didn't even use!)
The male is all over the tank. They sometimes hang together, sometimes not. Never any aggression or trying to flee from the other, no fear or wariness between either. Just hang until they lose sight of one another and then go on their own ways again.

Nah I fed the fish and some food probably fell in the acorn cap, or she was checking it for any, but they seem to really like checking them lol they were worth adding to the tank

Yea on the borelli it can be difficult to make sure; however if she turns yellow odds are set ;)
