Besides goldfish, are there any types of freshwater fish that have a long life span??

Our pacu turned 27 this year :)

I've read about giant gouramis living over 25 years. Most fish have decent life spans as long as they are taken care of and their needs are met. I have a male betta thats approaching 3 years old. My 3 oscars were over 6 years old when I had to give them up.

WOW! Debra_Mark, did you ever EVER dream your pacu would live that long when you got him?

My oranda will be turning 6, and that still is far older then what I ever dreamed when I first started the hobby!! I had NOO idea fish could live past 2 or 3 years when I started. :D

A general rule...no, lets call it a guideline, in biology is: the larger the animal, the longer the lifespan. They are sometimes refered to as r species (rapid development, short lifespan, small number of reproductive efforts that produce huge numbers of offspring) and K species(slow development, long lifespan, multiple numbers of reproductive efforts that produce small numbers of offspring). It's a black and white concept for a very gray science, but you can see it even in the fish world.

I have a couple dozen clown loaches at the 10 year old mark. I have had a handfull of central american cichlids for 10 years.

NOPE!!! I guess we will have to make guardianship provisions for him in our wills....;)

If you've got several thousand gallon tank, sturgeon live to be over 100 years old.

Obviosly this is a joke, but has anyone ever heard how larger species of sturgeon do in captivity? (believe me I'm not going to try, just curious)
