Although Elmer has to be my favorite so far... i have to say that "Dakota" was a horse name my friends and I created when we were very little... ok you weren't there!
If life bestows you with such a wonderful beast (sometimes crabby & difficult, but still wonderful); when you spend the time bonding, the "name" will just come.
For some reason, my personal horses were "M" names (Magnus, Marika & Morocco). Magnus was my pony since I was 2 yrs. old (14.3 hh and lived until the ripe old age of 32 yrs)...ballsy bugger; competed against Olympic level horses (me & him in pic.), he didn't know he was "small". "Morocco" we bought from the meat/glue market (literally, $300), he also went on w/ me to compete for Canadian young rider's team...and "Marika" came with her name (Hungarian) -we liked it & kept it.
.....Enjoy your new pal and the more time you spend w/ he/she, the faster the name will come to both of you. You'l be a team for life.
I'm clearly green w/ envy! I miss my "horse-days"!! ENJOY!!!
(feel free to PM me w/ any "equine questions"- or your new pony pictures" I trained for 3-Day Olympics, Canadian Team)
Congratulations on getting into the horse world! You must really love these expensive animal hobbies, eh?
I have had two horses in my life. My first one was a Thoroughbred mare named Sierra and my current one and the one in my avvie a palomino quarter horse (BTW...IMO Quarter horses are the only way to go) is named Digger. If I get another horse, which I hope to in a few years I want to name him Desmond after my favorite LOST character.
