I'm looking to get some java moss as I have a pregnant platy, I feel that it will be good for the fry.

My concern is how much care is needed for java moss, for example the lighting conditions: I have a 30" what I believe is a fluorescent light but in my opinion isn't very bright. No where near my Compact fluorescent 2x65watt.

I ask because I'm possibly getting another 29G tank for a fantastic price! :D and I would like to use this for any fry.

Please let me know what you think! Thanks!

So you have I guess something like 18 watts of lighting over a 29 gallon tank. Java moss is about as hardy a plant as you will find. I think it will hold its own.

Java moss grows okay under standard lights like that. That should be fine.

I had that same light strip over one of my 29's and the moss turned brown quickly. If you don't mind the over hang you can go to wal-mart and get a cheap shop lite for like 14 bucks and grow all types of low light plants:)

So you would suggest getting a better light? I can see why you'd say that if yours turned brown.

As for the other comments in regards to it being alright, have either of you had java moss before (I'm just asking because I'd like to see if it is just a fluke maybe that petluvrs died, or if I should consider a better light). If possible I'd like to avoid spending more money right now.

if you have the hood for a 29 like I have on my 29gallon fry tank then you'll have a little 18w flouro light tube...save yourself some cash and do what I did. The floro housing removes from the black plastic hood piece very easily. then just install two regular light housings into the plastic hood piece you just removed the floro unit from and get some screw in floro bulbs for the two housings. for about $10 I have 46w of 6500k light! the moss is doing great in the tank too!!

I can send pics and instructions on what to do if you're interested.

I'll send you a PM if you don't mind, but do you use any CO2 in that tank and such also?

pm recieved ;)

I am a newb ot this as well but I do not use c02 or ferts...and neither do the people I bought plants off of from here, and they have amazing planted tanks... low light low maint. plants will be fine without 02 from what I've been told.

I'll send you a "how to" pm on how to convert your hood...I may be a newb the fish tank thing but I'm an industrial mechanic and electrician...so I can help you wire some new lighting ;)

Moss is really hardy and doesn't need much light at all. I can't imagine it turning brown for lack of light under even the slightest florescent light that is the proper color temps (look for "daylight bulbs" if your not using something plant specific). Cool whites on the other hand are almost worthless.

It won't grow very beautiful and think under low light, it will grow slowly and stringy, but for a nursery tank, who cares?

The retro fit steelhum mentioned should help it grow much nicer.

No Co2 needed for moss.
