Java Moss

Java Moss grew fine for me in a 10G with a stock 15W warm white bulb. Actually I've found it tends to aquire hair algae if it has too much light too close to it.

What do you do with the hair algae if it infests it? Do you just brush it off and let the filter deal with it?

I kept java moss in similar lighting to yours. It did well enough to provide its function as cover and a food souce for fry. Like most plants it does better with more lighting but for your purpose it should do fine.

I had that problem. The hair algae gets too intertwined with the moss to remove manually. As I recall I got rid of it with a combination of water changes, Flourish Excell and adding ghost shrimp. Not sure which of those facters played the largest role.

So maybe pick up some ghost shrimp then? Because the other stuff I do have, but, in regards to the ghost shrimp, would they harm fry?

I dont think ghost shrimp are an effective means of algae control by any stretch of the imagination. They wont hurt the fry but dont get them for that purpose. From my experiences they mainly eat food that falls to the bottom.

ghost shrimp for my tank was a $20 meal. Within an hour of putting them in my tank every last one was gone...it was like a freeding frenzy.

Moss

I have Java Moss and don't have any special lighting at all. The aquarium store told me it's really tough to kill and grows like crazy, they were right. I think it doesn't have any specified temperature zone either, one batch isn't even rooted to anything.

As for the other comments in regards to it being alright, have either of you had java moss before (I'm just asking because I'd like to see if it is just a fluke maybe that petluvrs died, or if I should consider a better light). If possible I'd like to avoid spending more money right now.

Yes, I've had it and still do for several tanks with nothing but basic aquarium light. It still grows.

java moss is practically un-killable (even more so than java fern)
