GE Silicone II for tank sealing

Nice looking tank. I wanted to chime in as another non-expert voice to see if I could muddy the water a little bit more.:D

DAP also makes a 100% silicon product that is labeled specifically for use in food preparation areas and certified by the FDA. Now, I'm not one that is ready to trust the FDA in every aspect but it would seem that could be an option. I used that in the construction of a vivarium at one point and saw no ill effects, but that wasn't exactly the same application.

another $0.02.

Ahhh... WTH... I'll kick in with some useless confusing info. I've used GE II on many occasions for smaller attachments etc. as I was too dumb to even notice the difference. No problems...UNTIL I got one of those Tetra "Half Moon" tanks and used it to build an aquarium background. I ALSO used Krylon Fusion "textured" on the background (and now see shiny copper colored "glitter" becoming exposed). The tank cycled (or so it seemed) but even the slightest overfeed clouded the water and the ammonia spiked. It was also a high PH low GH/KH tank intended for Sulawesi inverts. FYI... Krylon won't say if there is copper in it as it's proprietary and they are concerned I'm an international covert agent for KAOS.
Tank never grew any algae though Hornwort and Java Moss was fine..
Right now I'm playing with it to see what I can learn. I saw two feeder crays at the LFS yesterday that had some sort of weird parasites (:yuck:) on their carapaces so I bought them and put them in there to see what would happen. I'm going to have to tear it all down anyway.

I can definitely say with all certainty that I have NFI.

I am still finding it hard to believe you get mold/mildew stuff in a product for FREE! They clearly charge more for the other which lists the stuff on the product. Now im not being argumentive, but i asked the Home Depot Guy and he said..If it was in it, it would be on the product label..Aquarium sealer says 100% silicon, why believe them? lol.. I buy as little as i have to at a fish store, its all marked up in price..A water bed fill/drain is half the price as the python hose hook up and does the same thing.Plus hardware stores have saved me a bundle on anything pump, air and water hook up related .. LOL sorry to get off topic but i believe silicon is silicon unless marked otherwise...

Actually getting a product for free that they usually charge for isn't entirely crazy. In some industries it is a very common practice. It can be cheaper to produce one version then it would be to produce one normal and one less expensive version. All depends on what the fixed costs are in the production process.

Usually in that case though there is some mention somewhere, it just isn't part of the sales pitch.

Apparently the mold inhibitor is indeed FREE with every tube of GE Silicone II, even though it's not labeled as such. Just for kicks, I decided to call the GE hotlinie again this morning, figuring I'd get a different response. I posed the question somewhat diffently this time, asking 'What's the difference between the Window/Door Silicone II and the Bathroom/Kitchen Silicone II? (which clearly states it HAS Biocide) Her answer shocked me as she said they were both CHEMICALLY EQUIVILANT, and she went on to say that when a customer calls in wanting to use the Window/Door version in their bathroom due to better color availability, she tells them to go ahead and do it because they are the SAME, with Biocides built-in to the window/door product without labeling it. Guess I sealed my tank with biocide caulking due to lack of informative labeling.

for what it's worth, regarding hte "100% Silicone" label...
100% SIlicone doesn't mean that that is the only thing in the tube( as previously mentioned). It means 100% Silicone caulking as opposed to Acrylic caulking or some other type being blended with it.
Basically it's like a certain fast food chain claiming their burgers to be "100% beef". God knows there are flavours and spices and fillers and binders in it, but what it's promising is that there are no other types of meat used, only beef (ok, it was a stretch but hopefully that might make it easier to understand). 100% Silicone just means that there are no other types of caulking mixed or blended into the product. There would have to be some additives or else you woulsn't have the option of clear, white, black etc.
