I finished getting my first planted tank set up. It's a 10 gallon low light, low tech tank that's moderately planted and has a large piece of driftwood in the middle. I currently have a colony of about 10 adult cherry shrimp and more juviniles than that (no idea how many but there are plenty of them). I've always loved the look of CPD's and would love to have maybe 10 in this tank? I've read a little about how CPD's can eat the juvinile cherry shrimp so I'm wondering how much will having CPD's affect the size of the shrimp colony? Will it be noticable? Will my shrimp start hiding a lot more with the CPD's in the tank? Where is the best place to get CPD's? I saw this auction on aquabid and it is probably my favorite source so far http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwcyprinids&1368088818, anybody else know of a better source, maybe a seller here? I would much prefer CPD's but is there something else that would do better like ember tetras? Thank you, sorry for all the questions.

CPDs are small, and while they may get a few of the smallest, as soon as they get a molt or three, they'll probably be too big for CPDs to eat. Ember tetras, and the other micro-schoolers like them, will be about the same level of threat to your RCS. It's not like you're throwing cichlids in there. And if you have sufficient hiding places in decor or plants, they'll mostly survive by hiding until they're too big to be eaten by the CPD. I found some tiny RCS hiding in my tank last night. Don't know where they've been during the day, but they've successfully hidden from my angel fish and rams.

Agree.
That's pretty much what I would have said.

You should look up bobtropicalplants.com

MsJinkzd carries them as well. She has a wide variety of fish suitable for a nano tank. Chili rasboras, for example, would do well, and are much less shy than CPDs. Without something to dither, CPD tend to spend a lot of time hiding. The Chilis are out all of the time, and too small to eat even newly hatched shrimplets. You could put 12-15+ in a 10 without worry.

My CPD's will eat every baby shrimp they can find. If you've got plenty of cover for the shrimp you might be OK, but my tanks with CPD's were limited on the number of shrimp that grew to adults.

Where would you guys recommend getting them? Aquabid or in the classifieds here? Or on seperate website?

Have you checked at your LFS? I checked at my LFS (there are only 2 non-chain store LFS's here) and neither carried them in stock but could special order them. I told them both the same thing:

"what is the best price you can do, including tax, for 10 CPD's, paying cash, and I'll come on the day they arrive so you don't have spend much time housing and feed them in the mean time".

They both have a 48 hour guarantee and getting the fish before they have to acclimate them and then netting them again and acclimating them a second time I would think be better on them anyway.

One shop.... the smallest, in the older building with not the best display tanks (but good fish)... meaning overhead is the lowest between the two stores.... said $8/fish. I said "Ok, let me think about it".... after I hung up I said NOT.

Second store, which is primary salt water and reef stock, in a major traffic area, newer shopping center, very VERY nice custom in wall shelving for individual tanks..... was $3.50 each, tax and all (mentioning you'll be paying with cash usually helps) if I buy 10 as requested.

So, I went with the $8/fish store......

just kidding :)

Got the fish about 3 months ago and they are doing great. I know the places mentioned above have very nice quality fish and I'm sure you wouldn't go wrong with them. But I came out pretty good by checking locally, especially since there's no shipping charges. So call around and see.

The ones I got were not too happy with various flake food I tried. They would nibble at it but not really devour it. I then remembered some golden pearls I had... don't know what size they are.. just labeled as size 1 (purchased from Aquabid to try them out). And the CPD's LOVE them. They have gotten better color and are more active since I started feeding that to them. I still do a little flake every now and then but the golden pearls are their favorite.

Is it worth posting here though? I'd rather get them straight from a breeder rather than second hand from stores.
