Breeding Tetras - Seeking Advice/Experiences

How many fish do you expect/hope to get out of this project?

I don't really know how many fish to expect form this project being that this is new to me. I do know that neons scatter a lot of eggs. Now how many of those eggs end up surviving & developing into adults is the real question (it all depends on my ability to follow instructions). I'm hoping that I can manage to grow out about 30 - 40 from my first successful spawn. If I can do that then I'll be doing cartwheels.

I don't breed tetras because I don't particularly like them. I may get some congos for my 125 but the run of the mill tetras are just, meh. I try to stick with less than common species, and while there are some rare tetras, I've yet to move into that direction. And as posted above, I avoid breeding fish that are readily available in local sources.

@ the egg question, infertile eggs are white, and if you look closely, will become enveloped in fungus in a day or two.

Look in the photo gallery subforum for a thread I posted a few days ago for an example picture of fertile danio eggs.

I don't doubt that there could be a ban on it Piranha. What I doubt is that there would be a ban on it & that I couldn't find any info about it online.

Funny thing is though, that when I asked the guy @ the LFS for any alternatives, he suggested "You know a doctor? You can try to ask a Doctor to write you up a script for it". LOL yeah right... I could picture that now..

Me: Hey Doc, I was wondering if you could do me a favor & write me up a script for some Methylene Blue?

Doctor: What? Why? You wouldn't be trying to turn your co-workers pee blue or anything like that would you because that could get me into loads of trouble.

Me: Oh no no doc, nothing like that. I'm breeding tetras.

Doctor: Oh in that case (scribble, scribble, scribble) here you go, good luck.

lol good luck with that one! Your best bet is probobly online, shipping is ussually cheap for supplies and its safe if you buy from someone respectable.

Fair enough, I can appreciate that tetras are not everyone's thing. I'm kind of glad that's the case & not that the process of breeding them is that much more difficult that breeding danios or other egg layers.

Thanks for elaborating on the fertile versus infertile eggs description. I'll head on over to the photo gallery sub forum for a visual of what you are referring too.

Thanks once again
