Common names are useless! It's probably a Parachromis friedrichstahli, which is pretty aggressive even for a Cichlid, in addition to being highly predatory on smaller fish. In practice that means it will eat whatever it can catch and swallow, and is likely to beat the snot out of anything too big to swallow but too wimpy to defend itself.
If you like the look of it, and it is indeed a friedrichthali, Salvini Cichlids are similar in appearance and quite a bit less aggressive ime, although they're probably a bit more predatory.
Freddy's are tough fish but in my experience are not nearly as mean as there relatives the Red Tiger Motag or Jaguar Cichlid. I have had no experience with Salvini's so can't agree or disagree with the suggestion. A good alternative is another relative P. loisellei which is a very nice looking cichlid which in the case of the pair I use to have were pretty mellow. They had half hearted attacks toward smaller fish. I had mine housed with Silver Dollars which grew pretty big with them and were rarely ever got even a mock charge. They were also housed with Giant Danio's which were ignored completely. When my RTM was put with them the Danio's started to disappear I lost my Silver Dollars and eventually the RTM was left solo after killing everything that was left with him for more then a few days.
LOL Seth. Well you know what I was trying to convince my mom to get these before I got her the crayfish she wanted and now I'm glad I was un successful. Dang that gave me a good lil laugh.
Hey Mike what isn't on your list? I think that list would be smaller to go through lol.
I would still suggest the Loisellei. How was your female Loisellei Seth? wasn't she well manored?
Salvinis are great and were very mellow in my SA cichlid tank. Then again, I also obtained a breeding pair because they were beating up the two 12" oscars in the 125g they were in. But they were spawning, so it doesn't count. They are also one of the prettiest FW fish ever.
