Will Gold Zebra Danios and "Regular" Zebra Danios school together?

As you may have noticed from all my threads and post, I am starting a 20g tank and it has been cycling for 10 days.

I bought five Gold Zebra Danios yesterday at one of my LFS and placed them in an established 10g tank. I also saw some "regular" Zebra Danios at another LFS yesterday. I'd like to buy 3 "regular' Zebra Danios to add a little variety, but only if the will school together.

So, do Danios care? I've read tetras won't school with different variations, and I think barbs will. So I'm not too sure on the Danios. Clarification please?

Thing is, the danios are the same species; the various tetras aren't. That's why the zebras will shoal together and the tetras won't - at least not to the same degree. Similarly, green, albino and standard tiger barbs will shoal together, but will be far less likely to shoal with other barbs.

Yea, I wanted to buy blood fin tetras yesterday, but then I remembered they won't shoal with my neons.

I think I'll I'll be buying some more neon today and get a few zebra danios tomorrow then. Thanks for the help.

Yes and no...

Yes, same species and they will school together when scared... even similar species Danios will all school together.

My Cherry Barbs will even school with my Danios when scared- and both play together nicely seeming to not differentiate between each other.

Neither seem to be scared of anything I do anymore- I'd scared them first couple of water changes... but now they're curious and even love to play under the stream of water as I add it- they'll "kiss" my arm as I rearrange caves/stones/moss balls or plants.

I have to be carefull with my suction hose because they come up to investigate it.

Thing is - Danios, love company of their own kind (and they won't differentiate between Zebra, Gold, Blue, White, Purple, Glofish, or Leopard) they are all the same in the eyes of a Danio... as they should be- they're the same species.

Despite loving their own kind- and playing with each other- they don't really school all that much when they're happy. They spread out across the entire aquarium.

Danios will actually try to play with any fish their own size- if you unadvisedly put a Danio in on his own- he'll pester his tank mates and stress them out trying to get them to play with him.

When they're happy they dash around the tank- playing in the plants chase each other etc... but they don't really school very tightly.

If you want a more closely schooling fish- try some of their relatives: Hatchet Fish or one of the Rasboras.

I've only had them for one day, so I thought maybe they would school more when they get more used to their new tank. I guess they really are as hardy and fun as everyone says. When I first put them in the tank they started zooming all over the place. They are more calm now, but still very active. When I fed them this morning they went into super hyper-active form. :headbang2:

I haven't had mine very long either- about a month- they get used to their new surroundings very fast.

I've always loved Danios- never had them when I used to keep fish in my younger days- they were always "the next fish I'll get"- I finally did get them this time around.

They really are quite psychotic. Mine will try to chase each other through gaps in the java moss that are half their size. To me- they seem like aquatic versions of springer spaniels- always active- very friendly to their owner and completely harmless.

They are very cool. My neons must be like "what the hell are these guys doing? Calm down, We're trying to swim here" lol. I though neons were active, but ****, Danios are even more.
