I have bought a vine from my local fish shop and was told i would need to soak it until it sinks. It's been soaking for two weeks now and still floats, does any one know how long this is going to take and if any thing can be done to speed it up?

Boiling it can sometimes help it sink, or screwing a piece of slate or tile will also do it. I have a piece of driftwood thats been floating for about 3 years, even after being weighted down it still floats.

hmm.... if the tank is set up for fish only, keeping water to the top of the tank, this vine will wind up rotting in the tank, fouling up the water eventually. Make sure it's meant for a fish only tank I guess from the LFS. If it is grape vine, I would advise against the use in the tank however, it certainly is a cool looking piece.

As far as sinking it though, I have a piece of driftwood that has been sinking for 3 months now, when I remove the bricks from on top of it, it still shoots to the water surface. Some woods just take more time I guess.

I was thinking that it looks like grapevine too - not so good for aquariums - OK for terrariums, reptile tanks etc.

PS - I have 2 pieces of DW that still float after >6 months in tank (post soaking, boiling etc.). They have a couple of sm. rocks keeping them down.

sounds like it's grape vine..if it is..it won't work in a tank.
it could be mopani..if it's this it will be fine..but mopani tends to be fairly heavy.
