Whats the best substrate?

Think I will get sand, hope it comes in black for my planted tank, going to lowes :) But what are tabs? I have gravel now, but my plants are having problems rooting in it, thats why I want something a bit tighter if you will. :)

where do you find that???? Please tell me lowes!!???

If you want cheap and will grow almost anything grab the cheapest potting soil you can find, ie. no additives and top it with sand or gravel to prevent it from cloudy up the water. It might do some weird things in the first couple of weeks, but it calms down in a month or so, pretty much the poor mans' ADA amazonia soil.

that sounds like something i would do.. it doesnt break up and float all over the water column?

pretty sure thats what the sand is for, but I am just growing mainly moss, and dwarf hairgrass, and some vals, thats it, are they ok in sand? I have also heard of aquatic soil that they sell at lowes, comments?

Pool Supply retailers, get out the phone book and let your fingers do the walking.

The cheapest is probably to ask a local member to sell you 1/5th of their unused bag of something good :) if you have a nano, you won't be needing a 10-20lb bag but that's the only way I know of to buy the good stuff.
