What's my fern up to?

A week or two ago, I noticed what I originally thought was just fish poo caught on the leaves of my java fern, planted a week or so before. Then I realized they were growing, and there were more of them. They look like the root hairs at the base of the plant, so I figure that's what they are...
It's only on the tips of two leaves - and these two leaves are the only ones that don't have root hairs - they're just wedged into the driftwood I have, but they haven't turned brown or anything, except at the base - but I think that's just tanins from the wood (my water is still turning slightly brown, need to do more water changes).

Here's a picture. More of these threads have grown since I took it several days ago.

Will I get another fern if I do something with these? What should I do, or do I just leave it be?

yup that baby ferns growing.. once they reach 3-4" you can snip

Cool! I've always had a black thumb, and aquarium plants are new to me, so this is certainly a first in more than one way.

I just did a water change to clear the water (because of the wood), and I discovered I was wrong - the stems of the two leaves are indeed beginning to rot. That must be what prompted them to start growing on just those two.
There are seven or so of the little buggars now.

Boy howdy. I count about seven so far. I don't really have room for that many, oh noes! But I might invest in another piece of wood and do some rearranging, and keep a few of them.

I'm actually off to the lfs now, to pick up some fresh carbon filters (I've been using the same one for a couple months while I waited for my tank to establish, and it's getting yucky - I can smell it when I do water changes), and some new light bulbs. Hopefully they'll have some interesting wood to look at, too!
