whats a good protein skimmer

Some people love Coralife skimmers, others hate them. I've never had issues with them and they run circles around seaclones.
 
Seaclones are one of the worst skimmers. Been there done that.LOL Do you have a sump? If so an in sump skimmer will be best. If not some good HOB skimmers are coralife super (i currently run these) I haven't actually ran these but I hear great reviews remora, and octopus skimmers. I ran a octo in sump skimmer and it was a great skimmer. Built like tanks and a new one runs pretty cheap as far as skimmers go.
 
My answer is always going to be an AquaC Remora for a HOB skimmer for tanks 60G and less. It is a very good skimmer for the size and price. There are definately much better skimmers out there, but for a skimmer under $200 that works reliably and without having to make any adjustments EVER, the AquaC Remora is hard to beat. Just the simplicity of it makes it much better than other skimmers IMO (ie, don't have to mess with air adjustments, it pretty much just works by hooking a pump to it and plugging it in.)
 
CPR Bak Paks if i had to do it again I would go with them.
Octopus are rated well.

Coralife I liked but are quarky on break in or after a good cleaning. Takes a bit to tune it on initial start up. 220 version I think has the best set up vs the lower end models. More bombardment and contact time...very very fine micro bubbles.

I still use the coralife 220 and my skimmate is nice and dark..and smelly.

Again I want you to read this before you purchase. It will help you understand what you are trying to accomplish.

I agree.
I have an AquaC Remora Pro w/ Mag 3 pump on my 75G and it has to be emptied daily if set for wet-foam and every 3-4 days if set for dry foam. The collection cup is huge so that's a bonus. I've never had any problems with it...very reliable and consistent.
I too, made the mistake of buying a dreaded Seaclone 150 awhile back. I never really got the thing to work that well even with a few mods. It just isn't worth it. I still run it, however, alongside the Remora. I use it mainly for aeration and water movement as it barely collects any foam at all...lol. Total POS. At least it came with a decent powerhead.
 
I have had a bakpack and Deltec MCE600. The bakpack required way too many adjustments to my liking. The venturi would get clogged and required weekly cleanings. The Deltec was pretty much set and forget, you just have to set it on the dry side. The only thing though is when you get in that Deltec price range, you are better off to invest in a sump and have an in-sump skimmer. The plus side is the re-sell of a deltec is very good, expect to get most of your money back when you do re-sell it....
 
I have an AquaC Remora as well (29 gal). It works great, it's relatively quiet, but the main reason I got it is because it has one of the thinnest profiles for hang-on skimmers. I only have about 4 inches clearance between my tank and wall, and it was the only reasonably-priced one that would fit.

I just put a MR-2 (My Reef Creations), on a 46 bowfront. I know it’s overkill, bigtime, but I’m of the opinion that there is no such thing as too big a skimmer. It’s one area you should not skimp.
