I have an established 26g bowfront. I currently have tetras in it but am going to return them and get one (or two if my tank can handle them) cichlids.

The ones the pet store has that aren't supposed to get too big are Red Zebra and Ice Blue. They also have an Electric Yellow but from my research some sites say they get 4.5" and others say 8". I don't know which is true.

Would any of these types work? Should I only have one or could I have two?

I won't have any other fish or snails, etc, so it would only be the fish.

Thanks...

I wouldn't do any mbuna. They are VERY agressive and need to be in overstocked tanks to spread the agression and your tank just isn't big enough to do that with. I would stick with smaller SA cichlids or something like jewels or kribs.

I agree with Razz. A mbuna tank would be like fight club.......but we can't talk about that.
I keep a few SA Cichlids and I love them, they are full of personality and fun to watch, and fairly easy to take care of.

Are you dead set on Rift Lake cichlids?

With a tank that size I'd be inclined to go with something smaller from South America, maybe Bolivian Rams, Some type of Apisto, or Keyholes (which get a bit larger, but are quite nice).

A pair of kribs might work as well. They're not Rift lake, but African Riverine.

You could also go the Tanganyikan shell-dweller route if you can find them.

Thanks for your advice. The reason I put down those particular fish is because they're the only ones our stores have. I wouldn't mind ordering one of the ones you've suggested online but am new to this and don't know where to start.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to an online place that's trustworthy I could order from?

members on here would be a good place to look, many are selling fish in the classifieds. I will be soon :)
