what does a skimmer do???

With a sump you have alot of space for filter media. You can design a plennum in your sump for use of a DSB, you can also use the plennum compartment as a de-nitrafyer (remove nitrates even more by adding various macro algae) Basiclly a sump is like a small filter factory with so much flexibility and diversity, much better than any canister. Any way that is myy opinion.:)

Ah, that is where I misunderstood you. I thought you were referring to protein skimmers, not sumps. Now it makes much, much better sense :D .
 
Right now I'm not running a protein skimmer but I have some fish that can create a heavy bio load and was recommend that I use one. I do not have a reef tank just a FOWLR I have 7 fish in a 180 GAL tank.

Niger Trigger
Hippo Tang
Sal-Fin Tang
Power Blue Tang
Golden Butterfly
Emperor Angelfish

Do you recommend that I use a skimmer?
