What do you feed your betta?

There is a stargate in my aquarium.
Hi all,

Right now, the famed Rocky T. Betta is getting Hikari bio-gold betta pellets as a staple food: 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening. He just loves the stuff. But I was wondering what else would be good for him to put some variety in his diet. I was thinking bloodworms or freeze-dried tubifex, but I sure can't put a whole cube in his tank (though I'm sure the little pig would do his best to eat it all). Eventually he'll have some tankmates, but they'll be bottom feeders such as pygmy cories.

Anyway, suggestions are welcome. :thm:

My sister feeds her betta 5-6 betta pellets once a day and a small pinch of live bloodworms as a treat every 2-3 days.

My bettas spit the flakes out. I feed Hikari Bio Gold for Bettas and once a week or so they get either frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp, frozen glassworms or frozen daphnia. They usually get the frozen food right before I clean the tank as it is sometimes messy.

I have a long winded response but I find this a fun subject so I want to babble.

Bettas are largely calm, non-energetic fish so I feel it's best to feed them sparingly and with high quality, varied foods. I have also noticed that they are more finicky than the less evolved schooling type of fishes. What one betta loves, another betta may choose to completely ignore. But bettas who live with other fishes are less finicky; probably due to the competition factor.
So with that in mind, this is my betta feeding point of view:

The list of foods my solitary bettas eat are:
HBH Betta Bits
Omega One Betta Pellets
SF Freeze Dried Plankton
Frozen Bloodworms
Cyclop-EEZ

The community bettas will also get the standard freshwater Omega One as well as the Omega One veggie or kelp flakes because they eat what everyone else gets. Betta pellets are given when I can manage to make sure only the betta will get to them. Maybe once a week.

With the solitaries the main diet is HBH or Omega One pellets (whichever I grab first) and the supplements are served on a random basis of choice, about three times a week. All of the bettas I have right now love the plankton and the bloodworms.

The bettas are fed only once per day maximum, sometimes skipping days. Like I said, in my opinion bettas shouldn't eat as much as more active fish. And because of that, providing maximum variance and nutrition seems like a novel idea.

Plus the water is a factor if you're keeping the betta in the usual smaller environments like five and ten gallon tanks. Fewer feedings equals less waste and better water quality maintained between changes. Bettas love clean water of course.

^^ Good response.

I Keep mine on Betta Pellets, the occasional Bloodworm treat, and sometimes sinking flakes (Veggie version).

I don't advocate floating foods much as they have bloating issues, that in IME, is related to them gulping air trying to eat flakes in particular that require them to break them apart on the surface.

...and the occasional blanched pea (shelled of course)

I feed 4x a week, small amounts.

mine gets normal FW flake (guppy food), betta flake, frozen bloodworms once a week, and if i can find them, live blackworms.

Mine is with other fish and eats the flakes.

mine gets pellets every other day punctuated by the occasional frozen tubifex or bloodworms (no more than 1x a week)

Those are all great suggestions, but one problem I have is that, for the next few weeks, he's the only fish I have, so I can't drop a whole cube in there, and thawing or rehydrating one to get just a worm or two seems like quite a waste. Is there a brand of these more treat-like that come loose? Should I just try a high quality flake to vary his diet?
