waspfish/butterfly "gobies"

My LFS had a tank full of these guys. So, I picked up a pair, not knowing what I was getting into really, I assumed they were gobies.

Boy was I wrong.

But, to my surprise they took a liking to my tank and they're a great addition to keeping the live-bearer population down.

They're the most picky eaters i've come across. They only enjoy live foods, won't eat flakes, they'll nibble on frozen bloodworms, but, other than that jeeze.


However, I picked up 3 female guppies compliment the 3 males I had in the tank already and what a perfect addition, I barely have to feed the Wasps anymore, they just eat ALL of the fry, it's so freaking cool watching them hunt.


I should have pictures of them up later, they're only about 1-1.5" right now.
 
Neovespicula depressifrons, I'm assuming? These guys go by so many names that I've lost count.

I'm not sure how often they need to be fed, but I'd assume it'd be the same for as any other fish.

BTW, what SG are you keeping them in? These are high-end brackish fish.
 
They're small fish, so 1x/day, skiupping 1 day/week for fasting. They are BW fish, which most live-bearers (except mollies) aren't.
 
Visiting BW occasionally & being forced to live in the SG required for most BW fish (minimum of 1.005, which is roughly around a cup of marine salt/5g) is not the same thing.
 
I forgot to mention--these fish are in the stonefish family & their dorsal fins are poisonous.
 
Yeah, i read up on them a good bit before purchasing, however, information is still sketchy.


The SG is 1.010 as read by a hydrometer.
 
I have one of these little guys (just over 1") as well and he seems to be just as picky as yours. I have tried feeding him frozen blood worms from a baster and he gets all excited when they come out but then he studies them intensely as they sink to the bottom and once he determines that they aren't alive he ignores them. The only thing I've been able to get him to eat are live tubifex/black worms and he seems to like those alright. I've put live feeder guppies and ghost shrimp in there before but my monos and archer seem to get to them before the 'leaf goblinfish' (neovespicula depressifrons) does. I just put a knight goby in there with him yesterday thats about twice his size so I'm hoping that I don't have 2 dead fish when I get home today but thats a different story...
