I just want to say that in all honesty I would guess roughly 60% or more of all bettas that are marketed for Aquariums never live past the betta cup stage. Sorry, but that is my guess. I have yet to be in a LFS--Mom and pops, Aquarium Wolrd, Village Pets, PetCo, PetSmart, Wal-mart, etc that did not have discolored dying bettas in it. So rescuing one fish from walmart is a service to that fish. It removes him from the unamed masses that die in transport or while waiting to sell, which is probably true of most fish in our neat little hobby.
BTW, don't blame the stores. It is the nature of the beast. No one here is gonna pay $40.00 for a betta that was shipped in a 10 gallon aquarium with great filtration. Can you imagine how much you would have to pay for a cichlid that was shipped in ideal conditions.
