ever leave a tablecloth outside all summer? It gets brittle and crack. Would suck if that happened to your pond.
It depends on how long you plan on having the "pond" set up. The actual liner material is guaranteed for 5-7 years. I wouldn't expect cheaper materials to last as long, but they should work for 1-2 years.
Hard plastic kiddie pools work great.

During the summer my mom houses her RES in an old kiddy pool. It even has a slide that we blocked with a piece of wood to create a shade area.
