Hi i have recently been recearching about valentini puffers i really like there behavour and there personality. I want to know a few things about them though. I already know this about them:
When they die they sometimes let out poison to the water killing all the life in your aquarium (Very rare though).
I know that they get pretty big im switching to a 300 litre very soon im watching it cycle.
Is there anything else like what they lke to eat ect.

Here are some pictures of them and how pretty they are.

Thanks kano5003.

Puffers have been known to eat corals and inverts and generally aren't considered "reef safe". Like any generalization, I'm sure there are exceptions and some people probably will report that they have puffers that get along fine in the same tank with corals, snails and shrimp. But understand that you're taking a significant risk if putting a puffer in a reef setting.

On the plus side, I've heard they have dog-like personalities when it comes to interaction with their care-giver.

i wouldnt get a fish that has been
1-known to tear up coral/inverts and
2-possibly kill all the live stock in my tank when it dies.
but thats just me.

I love there dog personalitys i guess ill take that risk and see because i know heaps of people that have them in with anenomes and corals and hermit crabs and coral banded shrimp and the puffer just swims hapilly past them.... Thanks...

If you're dead set on getting a valentini, you should first wait until you upgrade to a larger SW tank. 95 liters is what? about 25 gallons? Valentini puffers will grow to 5-6 inches. I see you're upgrading anwyays to accomodate your growing tang. I would also suggest that you work out an arrangement with your LFS where you can return the puffer if you notice him nibbling on your coral or inverts.

I have a Valentini Toby that is by far my favorite fish. I have had it for about a year and a half, and it is only about 2.5" to 3". I keep it in a 30g with 2 Ocellaris Clowns and a sixline wrasse, along with a dozen or so hermits and snails, a camel shrimp, and a peppermint shrimp. The peppermint shrimp is likely dinner if it gets too far from the rocks, but the camel shrimp seems to intimidate the puffer. So far I have only tried mushroom corals, and the puffer ignored them (though the camel shrimp ate them). Puffers might nip at stoney corals, but my Valentini is friendly with all other forms of reef life (except small shrimp like peppermints).

The puffer is more like a dog than a fish. It greets me at the front of the tank whenever I approach. The other fish seem to gain confidence by watching the puffer interact with me.

Here are some pics.

Kano....I really dont mean to be diss-resepectfull here..But, please listen to what people are telling you on here rather than taking the risk just because you like the fish's personality...

Thanks yes i have bought one but my friend is holding on to him he does not nip corals or his anenemes YAY!!. I am planning to get the salt and sand this tuesday comming and fill it up. maybe adding A little live rock as well. I do not have my t-5 lighting. Though i will be getting it in about 3 weeks when my tank is cycled. I am going threw a very hard procces with my fish because i have 3 big tanks and there all filled with fish lol.
So how long should i wait till i can add fish to my 300 litre (75 gallons). I ussally wait about 4-5 weeks becuase i add live rock from an established tank and i will put sand from my established tank in there. Thanks

You will have to wait untill the other tank has cycled...maybe 4 - 6 weeks..Or untill your Ammonia, NitraITE are all back down to Zero and the nitrATE is less than 5..

Listen Kano...You are being very dissrespectfull to all the people on here who are trying their best to give you advice based on knowledge and experience..You were advised in other threads NOT to buy any fish untill you move to your bigger tank..But you went out and brought a Regal Tang..And again, you were advised not to buy a Valentini Puffer, and you still go out and buy one..Why do you bother asking all these questions to us if you are going to disregard all the advice that we give you...

I also do not believe you about this other tank..You said in this thread that you are going to buy the salt and sand for the new 330l tank on tuesday this week, but in another thread ( My Blue Tang and post date 02-11-2007, 12:22 AM ) you stated that "you are currently filling the new 330L tank with salt water"...

Why is there no consistantcy with the infomation that you are posting? It is really starting to concern me now..

Issues that are concerning me with you and you tank are...

1) Your buying fish and not doing any research
2) Your buy corals and do not have anywhere near the lighting that is required or water parameters to support them
3) You do not even know what the correct water parameter levels your tank should be at..and worst still, after being told numerous times what test kits to have, you still have not got them. I know you aint got them because your still asking what test kits you have be buying.
4) Your stating things in one thread that is totally different to what you say in another. I refer to the new tank, being filled or not..

Sorry, but i just needed to get these few things off my chest, as it is really starting to bug me now..

Kano, I understand. I used to be very impatient when it came to getting what I thought I wanted. I have made a lot of mistakes and unfortunately some beautiful creatures have suffered due to it. Having said that, I think you would benefit from a good written assesment of 1) What you have...tanks, equipment, livestock 2) what you want to have eventually. For me this was the way to keep from doing anything that I might later regret. As I said, the Puffers can limit what else you can keep.

As far as buying fish for an uncycled tank, i can only say please don't. Be patient, even though it is hard, and allow the tank to cycle thoroughly. Give it a month or 2, just to give your livestock the best chance of being happy and healthy. Once you have come up with a final plan for the tank and cycled it, you can begin to add livestock, but I would add the puffer towards the end of the stocking. My puffer seems to view anything added to the tank after it as dinner, but everything that was in the tank before is left alone.

If you go to a LFS and see something you like, go home and research it. If the store got it once, they can order it again for you. I ordered my Valentini Toby after a long time of reading and thinking about my future plans.
