Using an autofeeder for shrimp?

Hey guys/girls,

I searched topics on this, but have not found one that fits my "bill". I'll be out of the country for 3 weeks on vacation with the family. We have no one that can come and feed the shrimp during that time. Has anyone used an autofeeder for shrimp? And if so, what worked for you?

Another option was to sell all my shrimp, then buy more when I return. But this is a last resort. (I did this with my yellow and snowball shrimp, as it was easy to find local buyers. Just have alot of Cherries now)

I wouldn't worry then. They will graze on the plants while you are away. I would make sure you had a timer for hte lights though. I honestly only feed my shrimp tanks max twice a week, more often once a week so i really think they will be just fine.

Not to hijack the thread, by why only once a week? I have a few ghost shrimp my my community tank and I notice them grabbing food during feeding time every day. Are they just gluttons and eat all they can get, but don't need to eat every day?
 
I don't because I have species only tanks that have alot of plants for grazing. I have found when I feed more frequently, I will often get secondary pests like planaria, etc. Feeding 2x a week or less the shrimp multiply, the tank stays clean, and the plants are beautifully groomed. The shrimp graze on infusoria as well as any algae which grows and are eating constantly.


Edit: ghost shrimp are scavengers so may require more supplementation that some other species of dwarf shrimp.
 
I'm thinking to setup an auto feeder for my CRS tank. but the problem is how to control how much food get dumpped into the tank. I see one autofeed has seperated small department for each feeding, that is perfect for my concern, but $60+ is not that perfect...

I have heard of people mixing food with gravel so only a small portion of food gets dispensed.
 
i would be very concerned about using an autofeeder for a long duration of time on a shrimp tank. If it malfunctions and drops all the food in, its certain death for your shrimp. If you feel they must be fed, do you have a friend or family member who could come over a few times a week to feed pre-measured portions or maybe consider a petsitter.
