I posted earlier about a flashing loach - I was hoping to treat him with a dip and I was wondering about dosage of quick cure - 1 drop per 2 gallons since he is scaleless? What is the procedure for doing a medicine dip? I also have a red-tailed black shark that needs treatment - should I double the dosage for him?

I'm looking for a detailed explanation for how to medicate a flashing fish with formalin and/or melafix. Thank you.

If I were you, don't medicate your fish until you see what exactly is wrong. Take your time to make a close observation on that fish.

If all you are seeing is scratching, don't treat for ich just yet.

fish can scratch because of water quality problems too.

and loaches can be sensitive to strong meds, so be very careful.

At this point, I would do a water change and add some salt before I added any meds. Don't add the salt if you have live plants. Actually, the quick cure will probably melt the plants too, so I guess it doesn't really matter..

perhaps you can post your water parameters?

loaches are just as sensitive to salt. IF they have ich, then use the temperature method...dont use formalin. it is too risky.

i tried them myself it was gone within 3 days. Raise it to 90 degrees.Don't worry, both fish can take it as they are from tropical regions. Just dont use the temperature method if that loach is a hillstream loach.

Melafix?all i know that it is tea tree oil and it only helps once the source of it is cured.

He is a so-called "yo-yo" loach. He has been flashing for about two weeks, and it is not ich. All the other fish are fine, with the exception of a red-tailed black shark who flashes only occasionally. There is nothing visible on either fish, though they both seem to be scratching near the gills. Water parameters are all fairly normal, and have certainly not changed since the loach has been flashing. He is in a fairly mature (1 yr) tank with live plants that I am in the process of tanking down. However, I was hoping to do a dip or some other treatment before I moved him into his new tank.

I'm doing the temperature method at the moment - I have him alone in my 5g hospital tank (he doesn't seem too happy) and have the heater set to 90. How long do I have to leave it at that? Any other advice?

It might be flashing from debris stirred up during your tank rearranging. Is the shark the only other bottom dweller? Do you have a very fine substrate? A small bit caught in gill tissues would be irritating. I have eco-complete that can send up a cloud of tiny pieces if I dig around deeply. I have noticed some flashing in my loaches for a short time afterwards that goes away when it settles.
