Hey guys,

I recently bought a jellybean parrot cichlid and I'm not sure whether its a male or female.

I also want to know what other type of cichlids (convict, african..etc etc) this one can breed with as I want to get him/her a mate! Thanks!

That looks a lot like a stunted convict which I see a lot in my lfs. Is it just me or are most parrots sterile?

Yes, most are in fact sterile but there is something like a 1% chance that two blood parrots have the capability of breeding. I have also heard that females will drops eggs occasionally but there is a very few chance a male is able to fertilize them.

woa. i almost got mad. the only jelly beans i've seen were crazy colour dyed fish and that's what i was expecting to see....phew.

If you read some of the magizines they have mix opinion on the sterile part. Parrots are a hybrid. Most parrots I have seen have a smaller mouth. I'm not sure how to tell the sexes apart on a parrot. You can put them with other South American cichlids.

I'm confused. Is jellybean parrot not natural fish or something? why are you mad at this hybrid fish?

So, im guessing from what everybody says...this fish only has a small possibility of being fertile, and it could only be fertile with a south american, most likely convict cichlid?

Jellybeans are man-made fish crossbred from pure strains. This is really a controversial topic. It will be worth your time digging through threads about hybrids, Claudio.:)
