What type of filter is the best to use? I just started my tank 2 months ago with a cheap-o filter from Walmart and the water is a little cloudy from the tannins in the Mopani Wood I just added, and yes I boiled it first :) so now it's only a little cloudy in the water. My question is: what type of filter is the best? I ordered the C-220 Marineland Multi-Stage 55 Gallon Canister filter which costed me over $100 on the web, $149.99 at my local Petsmart :silly: and the reviews I have read about it and other canister filters were outstanding, so am I going the correct route?

Oh sorry, forgot to put the size of the tank, it's a 55 gallon.

Get yourself a bag of purigen to put in the filter to take care of the tannin's water will be crystal clear in a day.

That's an excellent filter...filters can be odd, most folks are very particular about what they like.

Everyone has their own faves :)

I like most marineland. I use their penguin HOB's. I had one shut down on my the other day. Waited until WC to check it out. Had a full grown Anubias growing in the intake and 100 or so MTS stuck in the filter compartment. Cleaned it out and it started right up.

Like jayla, I'm partial to Marineland's bio-wheel filters, the Penguin and Emperor series. 95% of my tanks have a Penguin or Emperor on 'em. Really, it's a matter of preference and what I've found works for me. IME, every brand has it's quirks, things I like and things I don't.

As for the cheapo Walmart filter...four years ago had a filter die off in the middle of the night, and Walmart was the only place open. Bought a cheap Aqua-Tech filter to get me through a coupla days 'til I could get a replacement. It's still running today as efficiently as when I got it. Also got to lookin' at the filter cartridges, and noticed they were identical to the Penguin's filter cartridges, right down to the product no. imprinted on the frame. Found out that Aqua-Tech is Marineland's cheap line, just like Black and Decker tools are a cheaper version of Dewalt. Cheap doesn't always mean crappy, and although this filter wasn't/isn't my first choice, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another one if needed.

i personally will go with an Aquaclear for hobs and a Rena XP for canisters. been very happy with both, on many different tanks i've kept.

i hate hob filters they look horribloe in my opinion, ill stick with tetra whisper internal for small tanks and canister for larger tanks, really any thing larger than 55 needs a canister in my opinion. as for a 55 the whisper i40 would work great with 2 of them. thats my plan for my soon comming 55, possibly 3 of them even
