I have about 8"x8"x8" bowl with some rocks and live plants and one male betta. It looks pretty nice except that activity is limited to only that one fish. I was thinking about adding a few more fish and was wondering if it would be okay. I was thinking about 2-3 cherry barbs or white clouds. Would this overload my bio balance and would the betta be bothered by the extra fish or even kill them for fun? Just wondering....

What do you have for filtration/heat? What's your water change schedule?

You only have about 2 gallons to play with, not many fish will be happy with the limited swimming space.

You said the betta is i a bowl.. It sounds like there is not a filter or a heater for this set up. Without a filter or a heater the other fish will not survive in that situation. Even with a filter, the space is too limited and it is best to give Mr. Betta his own space.

:iagree:
I just wanted to add - Cherry Barbs are very aggressive fin nippers, and your beautiful Betta fins wouldn't last long...

...But regardless in a 8"x8"x8" bowl...nothing could fit could it?

My bowl has no heater or filter. Water temp is a cool 71F. Rather cool for him, I know but he seems to be okay. That's why I was thinking of White Cloud Mountain Minnows. They like cooler water and are pretty docile. Now would my Betta eat them for lunch?

Honestly there isn't enough room for any other fish in there. White clouds like to swim and school, they would not be able to do that in your bowl. Also the additional bio load with out a filter would most likely kill them and your betta from ammonia and nitrites.

Why don't you try some more plants for adding visual interest.

sorry, but no friends for your betta.

Really? I have never seen them nip as viciously as the tiger barbs but the tank is still too small to support other fish anyway.

For a bowl that size, get shrimps or snails.
