Does anyone know the latin/scientific name of Synodontis Lace Catfish?

My boyfriend saw these in a walmart, and they don't list latin names. Not even in the order book.

I found two or three different names. I want to get what he wants because he isn't really into fish, so I try to encourage it by buying what he likes.

hey its Synodontis nigrita. you can check it out on the species profiles (link on top of this page)

www.bluewhippet.net

The syno. nigrita is the one I found, but I also found the synodontis lace catfish listed as synodontis eupterus (a.k.a. feather-fin synodontis), and one site also listed it as synodontis nigriventri.

Hence the confusion.

Featherfins also have a feathery dorsl fin. Synodontis nigriventris is the true upside down catfish, which gets to 4".

The little ones I have seen repeatedly at Wal-Mart have always been the nigriventis. They are best kept in schools and are very shy.

I had an ich outbreak a year ago that wiped out my school and I have only one left which I see about once a month. They like to hide and mostly feed at night, so don't expect to see this fish very often if you have good hiding spaces for it. If you don't have good hiding spaces, then it will be stressed and short lived.

If they are selling the eupterus, make sure you do have a very large aquarium. I have one in my 75 gallon and he is one incredible specimin at 6 inches.

It is very easy to tell these two species apart, so look at photos before you go and buy them to make sure you know what you are getting.

I suggest you go and do some reading over at www.planetcatfish.com

I have always been a little confused on the syn. lace, since my wife bought one. There appears to be many varieties and they arent always marked correctly. When she bought it it was white with black spots, but as it matured it turned almost all solid black. Its also probably close to 8" long. We need to give it away if I can find someone local to give it too.

To add more confusion to the situation, I bought a synodontis robbianus that was labelled as "lace catfish".
