Anyone have any suggestions as to a sponge pre-filter that will fit my Eheim Ecco 2236? I purchased a Fluval Edge brand but the hole has a bigger diameter than the Eheim tube. I had thought about using a rubber band, but would prefer something that actually fit. Suggestions would be appreciated.

I use a dark brown colored micron bag on the 2236 intake I was thinking about a stainless steel screen filter but I haven't taken that dive yet, Had to clean the Sponge way too often for it to be effective, but I used a Hydrosponge IV
Take an AC HOB sponge of appropriate size and cut a slit in it appropriate to slide the intake from your ECCO into. It doesn't look the best, but works like a charm.
One consideration of using an intake sponge is that the intake sponge becomes the primary bio-filter as well as debris catcher. You may never have to change the media inside the filter again. Depending on the detritus in your tank, you may be cleaning the intake sponge weekly. For that reason, I prefer the sponge and plastic intake kit sold as the Marineland Penguin Power Head Reverse Flow Kit. It runs $10 - $15. The plastic intake keeps the sponge from collapsing and shutting off the flow to the filter. I've had plain DIY sponges collapse and clog.

If you're going in to shrimp, consider the stainless steel mesh intake filters. They are comparatively huge so the don't completely clog as readily as smaller intake screens.

Would you buy the kit or just the sponge? If you'd buy the kit will it fit my Eheim Ecco 2236's intake tube?
No strain on the pump, just a lower volume of water moving through a clogged sponge. I clean mine weekly with partial water changes.
