I am so angry at this product and its utter lack of responsibility to the fish's life.
This product claims: "The self-cleaning system runs entirely on physics. Simply pour water into the aquarium and watch it clean itself!"

It does not take into account at all tank size, heating requirements, dissolved oxygen and above all it does not account for water chemistry.

If you are as angry as i am please write to this kickstarter website, as i have, to ask them to please take down this very cruel product they are endorsing.

The site and product information can be found here http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/930441187/noclean-aquariumstm-self-cleaning-aquarium-for-bet

Did you actually read the description, it's very clearly designed for Bettas. The page has a fair amount of information on the care of Bettas.

Betta Fish Care & Cleaning Tips

Betta fish, also called “fighting fish” are loved for their beautiful flowing fins, vibrant colors and interactive nature. These unique qualities seem to draw in both fish fanatics and those who’ve never had fish before. Betta fish are low maintenance and easy to care for – especially when combined with the NoClean Desktop Aquarium – making them the perfect starter fish and great for kids!

Betta fish are inexpensive to aquire and maintain. They are sold at most pet stores for between $7-$17. The only other items you'll need is a small net, water conditioner, Betta food (pellets), and a plant / decorations.
With fighting fish a little food goes a long way. Feed your Betta a couple pellets once or twice a day. They can go a few days without eating so don't worry if you're away for a long weekend or leave your fish at the office. For a treat we recommend occasionally feeding your fish live food.

Water quality is key to your Betta’s health. Therefore, you should run the cleaning system every couple of days. The water you add should be about the same temperature as the water present the aquarium. Use water conditioner when filling the aquarium. Rinse out the cup before you fill to avoid introducing toxic substances, including soap and cleansers, to your aquarium. Betta fish should not be kept in a cold room.

Never put two Betta fish in the same aquarium. They’re called fighting fish for a reason! However, you can put two Betta tanks together for an entertaining show. This has the added benefit of giving your fighting fish some exercise. Just be sure to separate them when you’re done watching so they don’t get over-excited and stressed-out.

That's a lot more than most websites or stores will give you! This would probably be a lot better for a betta then some of the other things I've seen in stores.

Did you even read the entire product page?

The idea/design is to make what changes EASIER. Which is opposite everything you're complaining about.

oh, my bad, i retract my rant on species specificity part then.
But im still angry that they think they can replace water chemistry with physics

they aren't replacing water chem with physics, they're making it so we lazy americans can utilize physics instead of our precious calories to change the water.

they should recommend an under-tank betta heater

I don't know, I think the physics is a very smart way of maintaining good water in the jar. Water going in, the exit point being the Valve height which is actually creating a current from the tube going down, thus sucking up debris from the bottom, eliminating decomposing material from the bottom as the current carries it up the tube and out the faucet thing keeping water cleaner then if someone just dipped a cup in or poured off a few cups and then refilled like I've seen done so many times.

For the people who would be buying this, I could easily see how it could be a VERY good option for a betta. Add in an undertank heater or something and this would be a nice little setup.

oh dear feeling rather stupid now... i think i took it in the wrong sense. I see now what they are getting at using physics in aid to rid of waste. However its still a tiny tank and id feel better if there was some charcoal and zeolite in there and a larger surface area for oxygen exchange and yes a heater and a thermostat

lol, gotta love that feeling after you get done ranting about something, and then you're like "oh wait... yeah, that's not that bad" it happens to the best of us more often than we'd like to admit
