i have 2 silver dollars that went from 1 inch to about 2.5 inches in 3 months. what is the growth rate for this fish? does frequently changing the water make them grow faster?

what keeps them growing fast is usally when your taking good care of them. i never had them so i cant say for sure this is how fast they grow. you shouldnt do things to try to slow the growth down thats for sure. how big is your tank? they get to be 6-7 inch. they are also school fish that should be kept in groups of at lest 6.

Are these the two fish that were in your 10g will all the other fish? If so, this rapid growth should clue you in to what is in store in the future.

They do grow very fast, they eat loads, are quicker than other fish so eat the most food in almost any tank, and they will eat your soft live plants like they are going out of fashion. Lots of water changes do speed up the process also. Personally, I don't like them because of all these reasons and I just prefer nearly every other amazon fish to them.

what is a good dither fish alternative to the silver dollar? I have been planning to upgrade to a 125 and get a small school of some kind of dither fish that will go well with my CA/SA cichlids and am looking for some suggestions. Thanks

Hi there,

I've had my 2 Silver Dollars for over 4 years. They were originally 5 of them, but a few kicked the bucket after a while... They grew at a decent rate.

anyway my point being, they are very hardy fish. I've had LOTS of other fish with these guys and they have outlived everyone else, made it through all disease outbreaks, 3 house moves, everything....

like the other guy said, they eat alot and are super fast at detecting food. i have a convict with them and he has to compete to get food with them. Water changes prolly won't have that much effect on growth, I mean it can't hurt of course, but since SD's will eat until you stop feeding them... I think thats how you can make them grow. Feed often and remember they like vegetarian foods, but mine will eat anything no matter what it is.

I think they are wonderful fish. they are vegetarian piarhanas after all. hehe.

Once they get big they are a joy to have in your tank. a 55 gallon would be minimium though as they like to swim fast. I love my guys. They follow me around in my apartment and are def watching me. I can't part with them no matter what. Best fish I've ever had.
