I just purchased 3 Amano(?) shrimp; a.k.a. algae eating shrimp according to Petsmart. I have a 20 gallon. I thought 2 had died cause I found the exoskeleton(sp?) but apparently they had molted. I would like to get cherry shrimp...will these two varities get along?

What would make them molt only 5 days after bringing them home, just "that time" maybe?

What are their personalities like? The ones we have now seem to hide in the plants most of the day, do they come out more when the lights go out?

I love watching them move about busily cleaning. How can I make them happy little campers?

I have 2 in my cherry shrimp tank and they pretty much ignore each other. Because there are no fish in there (I'm guessing) they are out a lot. The only time I can't see them is when they are on the back of the wood.

Pretty much as long as they have enough calcium they are fine. I put a cuddle bone in my filter for them and the snails. I also feed algae wafers and snail jello. The Amanos will take a chunk of the wafer and pull it to one corner and munch till they get bored with it...lol. Molting is a good sign.

As destined said molting is a good sign. The Amano Shrimp are great shrimp to have. They are good algae eaters and tend to be pretty hardy. If you are looking to add Cherry Shrimp to the aquarium you will find they are quite compatible.

Cherry Shrimp are one of the most hardy dwarf shrimp in the aquarium. They will also breed quite readily. If you have any other questions about compatibility you can check out my Dwarf Shrimp Compatibility Chart. It will show you what shrimp can live together with out problems and with out worries of hybridization.

Shrimp are a lot more active when they are the only ones in the tank. you should set up an invert tank. pretty cheap and easy.

they don't 'come out' when the lights are off. they're in the plants because that's where the food is. it's not like they come into the open for a dance party once you out the lights. that would be awesome though.

they get along very well with cherries.

lets see... they like plants... I had ghost shrimp (similar to amanos, but cheaper. the poor girl's amanos lol) but I can't get my fish to stop eating them.

they breed easily... but I think bettagurl told me something about them only having babies in brackish water... maybe i imagined it... i dunno.

they'll eat algae but you may want to supplement them with algae wafers and catfish wafers.

it's probably just their time to molt.

In my (limited) experience, the only ghost shrimp I've been able to keep for more than 2 weeks are the ones I put in my brackish tank. The female is saddled, but either I've got 2 females or she doesn't like the male. lol. The other ones has dots on its tail (which I'm told is a male).

But wait....the OP was about Amanos...

Anyway...good luck with the Amanos.
