I would like to find a schooling fish that is really hardy. I dont really like red eye tetras or danios. My neon and cardinals die all the time and am looking for something that will last longer.

How many gallons is the tank and what do you have in there now?

I've also experienced a decline in the hardiness of the pet store bought neons and cardinals. I think they are overfarmed! Same thing seems to be happening to a lot of varieties of petstore cories. If you can get some rummy nose tetras, I think you'd like them. Their whole nose area gets bright red and they really school where I found the neons really didn't. Neons kinda just hung out on the sides of the tanks. Although the rummies are considered to be sensitive, I found no problem with acclimating them. I did it slowly since the petstore water is usually around 7.0 ph and my ph is 7.6. I emptied half the bag water out, floated the bag and every 10 minutes added a couple of tablespoons of water until I had doubled the volume of water in the bag. I've had absolutely no issues with them like with the neons/cards.

36 gallon bow with 2 pearl gouramies 2 dwarf gouramies, 5 guppies, a bushy nose pleco, a few mystery snails, a few ghost shrimp, a female krib, and as of now 2 cardinal and 4 neon tetras

Any one else have suggestions besides rummy nose tetras?

How about endlers live bearers? They are great little guys with lots of color. Never a dull moment very active and very tough as far as pH and temperature. Not commonly available at the LFS but readily available at Aquabid.

although they aren't considered "schooling" fish i really like my cherry barbs. Ideally, you could increase your cardinals...but as a second choice the cherry barbs are great and always actively engaged with each other.

Are they hardy? Will they be ok with my current fish? I wont buy cardinals or neons any more all they do is die

I have them with neons, cardinals, honey gourami, cherry shrimp and cories and they don't bother anyone but themselves. If you get them, I would get 1m/2f ratio as the males chase the females a good bit (not doign any damage). I have found them to be hardy, I didnt lose any during qt or since they have been added. The males are super vibrant and they get a little bigger than the cardinals. They also are always in the front of my tank and like to munch on algae (a little, not enough to be considered "cleaners"). I really enjoy them.
