Hi guys,

I've started the freshwater version back in Jan 2009 and have been updating the progress in the freshwater section of this forum since more than a year ago. This is the very first forum that I have used to talk about this app so it sorta feels at home. :D

The thread for freshwater version is found here:

AqAdvisor - freshwater version

Back in Sep 2009, I released it with about 200 species and much simpler set of features. As of now, it is closing on 900 species and many many new features have been added. Every single new species and features were requested from users.

Starting about a month ago, I started developing the saltwater version. The goal was to share as much code as I can but still allow differences when needed.

I've released the saltwater version during the past weekend with very limited number of species (only 14!). For those who have followed the freshwater version will know that this number will increase significantly over time. Accuracy will improve over time too.

I will admit my saltwater knowledge is rather limited - I have been reading about them for more than 3 months now and about to setup my first tank!

Please try it out and let me know what you think of it.

AqAdvisor - saltwater version

I'm looking for any inaccurate results reported by AqAdvisor and also any missing species that you may own that you want to try out first. New feature suggestions are welcome too.

Thanks and enjoy this great hobby! :D

Cool. I spent a lot of time using your FW calculator when planning my tanks. Actually started up a SW tank a few months ago and was wishing I had a tool for that as well!

I'm still learning SW myself, but I think there are some areas where you'll have to make some key changes from the FW tool:

Live Rock as bio filtration -- maybe need a field to enter how many #'s
Use of sumps for added water volume
Add in a factor depending on presence and type of protein skimmer
Reef-safe, versus non-reef-safe fish
Specific Gravity requirements
...probably other things I'm not aware of :)

Good luck with the project!

What about adding Liverock as one of the filter choices and let them enter them either in pounds or kg? Or perhaps that's kinda confusing.

Use of sumps for added water volume

Yes this will be coming. I was going to implement it for freshwater anyways and now I have one more reason to implement sumps.

Add in a factor depending on presence and type of protein skimmer

Yes I am going to have to read up more on this topic.

Reef-safe, versus non-reef-safe fish

Yes this will be an attribute added to DB. Should be easy to implement.

Specific Gravity requirements

I actually have this in DB already but didn't display it. Wasn't sure how important this is for each species. As usual, different profile sites don't always hold same values for the same species.

...probably other things I'm not aware of :)

Good luck with the project!

Thanks! Your suggestions are much appreciated! :D

um, more fish species, like dartfish, sharks, and um whatchamacallit, oh yea, angelfish. Basically, if you can find it on this site you should add it eventually: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/aquarium-fish-supplies.cfm?c=15 . Um also, i like the idea of a LR in LBs category. And # of power heads too. Maybe add a second column for corals and inverts.

Looks like a good start, but saltwater is so complicated.

Right now with a 100g tank, if I put 2 blue tangs in there (just a random choice) it says my tank is overstocked by 133%, and I should do weekly water changes of 75% per week.

75% per week would probably crash the tank.

Not sure how that math is being done, but it's way out of whack. If you want to give us some details how your figuring that out we might be able to give you some specific advice there.

I like that it does warn you about the compatibilities and dietary requirements, very cool.

Challenges are ok. I didn't think it would be a piece of cake. :D

What is your tank size, in dimension? Also, what would be the maximum that would be suggested as far as water changes go? Sounds like I will need to keep a maximum number here with appropriate warning if the setup goes beyond that level.

Basically a lot of reverse engineering. I have many fundamentally sound general formula that I continue to tinker until it gives me the results I need. I realized long ago that a set of general formula alone will get me no where because of many exceptions so I allow those as well.

In this case for Blue Tangs, I checked couple of web sites and went by with their stocking suggestions, tuning Blue Tang attributes. So for 2 Tangs, what should be the requirement?

I like that it does warn you about the compatibilities and dietary requirements, very cool.

Have you looked at the freshwater version (see the link in the first post) before? It will give you some idea what I have done so far for that version and what I may end up doing for this version as well.

Thanks for your feedback! :D
