I'm hooking up a 5 Stage, 75 GPD, RO/DI unit today, finally freeing myself from the weekly water run. My question is, should I allow a certain amount of water to run through before I start collecting and using it? If my TDS says so, can I start using it right away? Thanks.

As a matter of procedure, i would let it get about 5 gals or so through it before first usage...This will allow the the system to be flushed properly.....after that, use at will...just dont let the cartridges go dry....

I had a guy at a LFS say I should run 40-50 gallons through. I thought that was pretty high. I'll look out for drying them out. I will be making about 20 gallons a week, once a week, then feeding out of a small tank.

I just dont see a need to run that much off if your TDS is showing clear....a waste....

MAKE SURE you disconnect the line from the last filter that feeds the membrane and run the system into a 5 gallon white pail until you see no carbon fines whatsoever! Normally a whole bunch of carbon fines come out on initial start up. That tiny dust clogs your membrane.

Once that runs clear, hook it up to the membrane and run a gallon or 3 out thru the whole system. If the TDS is good, use the water.

I recommend bypassing the DI when rinsing the membrane for the first time, then flush water through the DI resin.

By last filter, do you mean the DI chamber? Run the three RO Chambers water into the bucket until its clear, then run a few gallons running it complete? Man I am happy to have this thing.

No!

You should have a sediment filter. Followed by a carbon block filter. This is usually followed by the RO membrane. Then, if you have it, the DI chamber(s). You need to look at your system and understand it. Figure out the water's path. Figure out which is the carbon filter. You want to break the line leaving the carbon block and run water thru the system until no more carbon fines show up. Then re-connect and run a little more water thru the rest of the system.

I know this is about a RO/DI filtration system but I'm thinking about installing a whole house filtration system, does anyone see a problem with this?
