Rats or Hamsters?

ok, now i've totaled up the votes... rats, hamsters, mice, other. annnnnnddddd...... THE RATS WON!!!!! i'm getting a rat (male) for xmas. thanx for all the suggestions!

Weird. I must have had an abnormally nice hamster.....

But have fun with the rats! My mom probably would never let me have ay because my aunt had them growing up and let them wander around the room, which always freaked my mom out...oh well.

Nah, I've met one nice hamster before, she'd even let you kiss her.
Mine bit through my hand. lol

Make sure you get a tame or baby rat.
Try adopting form a shelter, many people turn in tame pet rats.

Congrats on the rat decision! I've kept hamsters and rats, and they're both good pets. I recommend two or three male rats rather than one; they are social animals and appreciate company. Get them young, from the same litter if you can, to limit aggression.

By the way- check flea markets and yard sales for rat cages. You can often find them fairly cheap- I got a 38" X 24" X 18" cage with platform, food hopper, and assorted accessories for a mere $20.

No...I have had 5 hamsters throughout my life, and my sister has had 1. All six of them have been NOT nippy. They may occasionally test you out to see if you are food, but its not a bite, and it doesn't hurt. Of course, this is only if you handle them often. If you don't handle them, they become shy and nippy.

So, no, your hamster was quite normal!

having never owned neither rats nor hamsters i can give no opinion on either though i would have to lend my call on this to the rat camp

i know rats are very very smart

in our house we own a ferret, 5 degus and 2 chinchillas

the ferret is a blast so i would recommend a ferret over any other rodent for the reason that they dedicate one area of their habitat as a place to go and they are just a blast to have downside is you need a very big enclosure for them

second to that chinchillas but gunea pigs are also easy to catch

but i vote for ferrets

Ferrets do have quite a few health problems, if I am not mistaken.
Great little guys, but many things I have read says they can run up a vet bill.

that, and they require a LOT more attention, than say, a rat. theyre very social.

oh, and they stink. lol.
