Just picked up some "poly-fil" (by Fairfield) polyester batting at Wal-Mart. Product description is as follows:
100% polyester
Bonded to resist fiber migration
Non-allergenic

On the bottom is says:
80% white polyester fiber
20% resin treated white polyester fiber

I've seen two posts on this site - one says use bonded, the other says don't use bonded. Also, another says no resins or starches. I found only one that uses this specific brand and has had no trouble. Just wondering if anyone else uses this specific brand, or if not, can you tell me from the product description if it will be ok? Thanks for the help.

The only caution I can remember about the stuff is that you shouldn't use flame retardant treated varieties.

I don't know brands and such, but my take is that the cheapest plain poly fill is the stuff. A concesion might be to use the quilting variety of it since that is formed into a fluffy sheet that would be easyer to use in hang on back filters.

I have also come across posts that suggest that some brands of polyester batting/stuffing, in addition to being treated with flame retarding compounds, may also have been treated with an anti-fungus agent. You can try writing the manufacturer of whatever brand of batting you intend to use to ask if it has been treated with anything.

 All these things to consider!! I just opened a bag of the stuff I had hanging around and put some in my filter!! All it says is 100% polyester fiberfil!

Well if that's all it says on "yours" then YOU are good to go.

Not sure if Joseph is though.

All you need is for the bag to say 'hypo-allergenic'. I've been using it with no problems for months. The kind that's sold in lfs specifically for aquarium filters, such as 'marina' brand,is in fact, the exact same thing.
Its kind of like 'aquarium' salt and table salt. The same thing. (different price tag).

I have some Soft Touch Poly-fil Supreme by Fairfield that I use in my Emperor 280. Works great. Mine says 100% polyester fiberfill on the front and bottom though. Bought it at Walmart for 2.50 ( 8 oz bag about the sizeof a small pillow). In 6 months I have not even used 25% of it.
