It's all about the money. When I see people looking at then in my LFS I always tell them how they shouldn't buy the fish. The LFS doesn't really like it but hey I pay most of their salaries with what I spend so they don't say too much

Better to have informed customers because trust me most of them do not even have a clue.

I've been checking out different fish stores in the Denver area lately just to see who has what stock, who seems knowledgeable, etc. There are enough in the area that if I see them selling tattooed or dyed fish I take them off my list of places where I will shop. I ran accross one on Parker Road in Aurora that has tattooed blood parrots. It made me sick.

The sad truth is marinemom is right. Most people that I tell this to DO NOT BELIEVE IT. People go into a store and see something "CUTE" and have to have it.

Its sad to what end people do to fish to sell them. But I fell for it too when I was in highschool I wanted some tattoed Tinfoil barbs, not knowing they were modified that way. So glad I never purchased a pair.

Yeah it is fake and I had no idea that is was when I first started into this hobby. I have four painted tetras that are a year old now and despite the dye are doing extremely well. Now that I know how cruel a practice it is to do this to these fish I would never buy them again will either buy black skirts, serpaes or bleeding hearts. You live and learn and once you do you get an education on what not to do.

Serpaes and bleeding hearts are not dyed as far as I know. It is those albino forms of black skirts that are. Psst...They cannot be albino with black eyes.

i just got those same fish for free and i feel bad for them. i'm going to pick them up tmrw and its an hour drive; they are so fragile, i don't want them to stress
