pictus catfish

my 2 pics are 5 years old and about 8 inches long in a 90 gal with oscar, dempsey and sev/.... tough fish...have pvc piping for them to rest in and never a problem...the bigger cics would never think of bothering them... I think the 2 of them COULD inflict serious damage if needed....

I've had two pictus for about 2 months now. They both started out around 3 inches. I had one hiding place in the back of my 55 behind a rock. That's where the two of them went and I would only see them during feeding for about a week. Then all of a sudden, one chased the other out. It's like they had a fight and one had to move away. I went to Petco and bought a hollow tree stump type thing so he would have a place to hide. Now the aggressive one seems to rule the tank. He's always on patrol with occasional trips back to his rock to make sure all is well. The other is all but forced to remain in the tree stump. If he comes out, they go round and round. Then, about 2 weeks ago, I noticed that the timid one outgrew the aggressive one and is now over 4 inches and much bulkier because he wasn't allowed out of the tree stump for excercise. Now, they have switched spots! The larger timid one has stollen the prime spot in the back of the tank behind the rock and the aggressive one is without a home and has moved into the tree stump. All in all I like mine. I see a definate difference in personality between the two. The "aggressive" one is always out. I don't have a planed tank, just lava rocks/fake plants. It's pretty bright in there during the day with the lights and all. But he's still out cruzing. The other one I don't see too much of. But that's ok, because it's a treat when I do see him. I have always been partial to 'long' catfish types and the pictus do have some interesting colors and those wiskers are cool too. I've got a couple of corys, clown loaches, bala and silver tip sharks, tetras, gouramies, a pleco, platys, and a borneo sucker (looks like a really small ray).

Well, I'll agree, pictus are great looking, they're so shiney and greatly patterend, but I didn't like mine very much. He was...eh, not very friendly. I had plenty of caves and logs, so he wasnt really stressed at all, but he loved to try and dominate the bottom of the tank by slamming himself into all the other fish down there when they got close to the center log, which is why he was killed....by god I dont know how they killed him though, he was faaast. He could zip from one side of the tank to the other in no time at all.

We have only had our 3 little picti (?) for a couple weeks now, but they are already my daughters favorites! My hubby always thought they were very cool with their long whiskers... I was never too interested in them, but since he's the one footin' the bill for my aquatic obsessions, I had to let the guy pick a couple fish to toss in the tank, didn't I? These guys are pretty small now, only 2 to 2.5 inches, but they are the fastest fish i've ever seen! ...and now they're really growing on me too!

At feeding time, my girls press their faces up against the glass and giggle uncontrollably as they come zipping by over and over again.

We're all pictus fans now!

The two pictus cats I have entertain the crap out of me when they chase eachother around the tank, but I have become really worried about them recently. I think they tore one of the claws off a red crayfish that was in there, resulting in his death, but now one of them is swimming frantically around, and it looks like the end quarter of one of his feelers has been bitten. The two angelfish that are in the tank swim up and make growling noises at him, which i wasnt aware they could do untill i heard it myself. I just hope the cat doesnt kick the bucket, he is acting almost exactly the way the crayfish did between loosing his claw and passing on.

well... i have them both dont really care for them. i think they are beautiful looking fish, but when they are actually out of hiding... they are very skittish. but that isnt a problem, because they are ALWAYS in hiding!! not my personal fav, and this is a nocturnal tank! oh well! if anyone is in the greater detroit area and would like one or all, i will give them away to a GOOD home. otherwise i'll deal with them
