About 1 month ago I Purchased a Large Tree Stump Turtle Basking Dock at Petsmart (Made by THRIVE). Apparently THRIVE is associated with Petsmart (However all of that works). Anyhow, I have a 125 gallon freshwater aquarium and I absolutely LOVE this piece. I have been hesitant on adding it to my aquarium because I have been reading stories online about chemicals leeching into the water from reptile decorations. I have asked Petsmart (Called, and talked to a store associate in person) and neither person can answer me as to if the piece would be safe for my fish. There is zero information on the website as to what it is made out of, but it does say for Semi-Aquatic reptiles. I am somewhat 'guessing' that it would be safe for my fish since it is "semi-Aquatic" but I just want to get some other opinions. It is a rather large, heavy, detailed tree stump piece that would look absolutely amazing in my aquarium. Any help/advice/opinions would be GREATLY appreciated! Also, this was the only 1 that they had for sale, there was no tag on it, so I would not be able to tell you what it's tag would have said. It is rough in texture, and does not appear to be coated with anything to "smooth" it out.

I've "heard" of some reptile wood being treated for pests...but I thought it was only real wood not resin (fake) wood like yours. I have used real Petco/Smart wood, both mopani & Malaysian, from the "reptile area" without problems, but not resin wood...it may be a myth...

You could try soaking it in a bucket or tub & change the water for a while. Or try adding carbon to your filter & changing it often...I'm not sure it's necessary...it depends on your level of paranoia.

You can also try to find the company online & communicate with them directly instead of through Petsmart. Google is your friend

Thanks for the reply! :) Yeah, I have tried googling them and cannot find anything. Everything that I do find is associated with Petsmart :(

The main Petsmart website likely has a "contact us" link. If you haven't tried it maybe it's time to try that?

Of course in these Covid times, who can say what individual stores may have done to prevent the spread? Sprayed hand sanitizer over everything? Or what? I'm not belittling your concerns in any way, I have no idea...& corporate Petsmart may not either...

Let us know what if anything you find out. Good luck!

Soaking in bleach then a few rounds of dechlorinator soaks may help, I just don't know...

Knowing my level of paranoia, I’d do both, the carbon and water change in bucket ?
