it depends on your area but keeping a eye on it is a good deal. i find all kinds of tanks with stands for $1 a gallon often with other equipment. you just have to look.

There are some great sales at [FONT="]"The Fish Place" at 141 Robinson St. North Tonawanda, NY. Don't know if you are in Western NY though. They start their sales at the end of October and go till Christmas.

This is really the best way to go if you want to get a really good bargain. It just takes a lot of patience. Depending on what part of NC you are in and what size tank you want, pet supplies plus has a deal going on right now for a whole 10 gallon setup for I think it's $28, which is pretty good, and they usually run some decent sales on some of their larger aquariums too...although I don't think they carry anything huge if you are looking for something giant. Anyway, good luck.
The reason you see the rip-off deals on CL is that those are not selling and people keep re-listing them. I think there are good deals at least sporadically most places on CL, but they don't last long.
If you are looking for a big aquarium, try glasscages.com. You should be able to get delivery to a relatively convenient location for a reasonable price.
The Petco sale takes place at a different time for each store (AFAIK) and they only get up to 40gal tanks.
On Craiglist you can find anything, I found a 120gal tank for $120, and i think it had a stand and filter/light the works with it. Good Luck!

Maybe if you try different ways to search on CL you'll find great deals. It does take some patience and searching and waiting. I just bought a 125gallon with stand, 2 canister filters, heater, lights - complete set up for $100.00! It's older but in great shape - not home made or anything like that. Try searching in Pets and in the search field on the main page both. Search for "fish tank" and "fish aquarium". Also, sometimes you can just search "fish" and do some extra checking because sadly, you'd be amazed how many people can't spell aquarium!
Those of you who may not mind traveling, or live in an area with a large number of craigslist locales might get some help searching by using http://www.crazedlist.org/.
