I just spent some time watching my 29 gal. tank, and I noticed my Peacock Gudgeons are acting a bit funny. There are 7 of them in the tank, but usually the 4 females are the only ones visible (with the exception of feeding time). The males normally hide out in the driftwood and caves. All of the females have big, round bellies.......but one in particular has a very rounded belly. I noticed this female hiding in some hollow driftwood, and the two bigger males seem quite interested in her. Also, these two males have been facing off and fighting with each other, which I have never seen happen before. They seem to be quite serious about it. I'm assuming this is spawning behavior I am seeing (?) Does anyone have experience with these fish that can offer some insight?

oooooooh, someone's in loooooove!!!!!!

not sure w/ this fish, but this is what happened w/ my jewels. the males fought and the girl was acting kinda funny. If you want the fry, you may want to look into a divider or a breeding net. otherwise the fry, if not the eggs will be food. Some people like to let nature take its course, and mabey after 4 or 5 tries mom and dad will sucessfully raise some of the fry to a livable size

I have bred these guys often but never in a community set-up. Once the eggs are laid, the male will chase the female away and protect the eggs. He is not too good protecting the fry which are almost impossible to see as they are almost a clear non-color. If you go to my profile you can find a link to my site where I have an article on breeding them.

Z Man - thanks! I found the article very helpful, and have saved it in my favorites.

It seems like it is spawning behavior that I'm seeing. This caught me unprepared......I was hoping to try breeding them at some point, but didn't think it would happen so soon. I will be moving in a couple of weeks, so the timing is not the best. I guess I have no choice but to let them do their thing for now. When I get moved I plan to set up a breeding tank or two for them. I guess it can't hurt to let them get some "practice" in :D
