Just wanted to let everyone know and especially those who are looking to get started in the hobby that getting the equipment online if possible compaired to an LFS or even petco is best for saving $ IMO.

For a few dollars more than the price of an AC50 at the LFS, I got an AC50, Visatherm heater and whisper airpump including shipping....

Fish on the other hand is a different story lol

Yes, it is indeed cheaper to buy online. However, a good portion of the time, once you add in shipping, it isnt THAT much cheaper, depending on what it is that you are looking to purchase.

The downfall of purchasing online is that you are not supporting your LFS. These folks need your support to stay in business. Yes, they are a bit more expensive. But if everyone keeps up the trend of purchasing online, more and more LFS are going to go under. Then what are people going to do when their filter or heater goes poof in the night? The majority of folks dont buy 2 of everyting in the case that something breaks. So, with no LFS, their fish will surely perish waiting for the needed hardware to be shipped.

I havent located a Mom & Pop LFS around me as yet, but if I do see one, as long as they seem to care and be somewhat knowledgeable, I will shop there. Until then, I am stuck with the big box chains. To date, the only thing I have purchased online is my ferts from GW.

Well seeing as how I was into the LFS for over $200 with the tank, hood, gravel, decor, and fish I think I'm supporting them just fine lol... and if I can save some scrilla on getting the other stuff online, then I'm for sure taking that route.... :)

i saved a grip on my heaters by taking in Petsmart.com prices into Petsmart...
hehe

lol I felt guilty confessing to my LFS (absolutely not a chain store) that I had bought Prime online...but they just don't sell it over here so whatcha gonna do...I confessed...they forgave me...and told me I was doing the right thing using it anyway

I buy my supplies online too but I get the fish at the LFS. I can't stomach paying that much shipping for fish, then again the selections are pretty nice. Maybe someday when money is not an object anymore :)

Yeah, but my LFS prices aren't "a bit more expensive." In fact it's like they are buying from the same catalogs I receive in the mail and then marking their prices up from there. Usually they are at least 100% higher than I can do online. The shipping pays for itself with a 2 item order.
