anyone own one of these fresh water puffers and have anything to say about them? I was considering getting one putting it in a 8 gallon by itself with sand bottom. its called the

Tetraodon miurus / potato puffer / congo puffer

All threads on puffers are kept in the Brackish forum, even for the FW puffers. OG

I don't think an 8 gallon tank would be large enough. You'll also want to start developing a good source of live, crunchy foods before purchasing the puffer--without adequate crunch, their teeth overgrow and require trimming.

The fish need about 30 gallons of water, large stand of plants (live or artificial), several cave or overhangs for security, and prefers fine gravel to sand as it buries itself. A long tank is best (sich as a 30-long) but a 29 will serve. A lurking predator. See the pufferlist for detail. It is best to establich these fish in their permanent home as early as possible to avoid stunting and the hassle of moving an inflatable fish.

for a tank that small id recomand a few dworf puffers or a nother won that wold work is a green spotted puffer i have won and there pretty neet fish to wach they get to be around 4 to 5 in hope this helps

I see, he must get a lot bigger then he is at the LFS then. So you would recommend a 20-30 gallon size then? anyone in here ever owned this particular kind of puffer? pretty neat looking caught my eye.
and I am assuming there are no puffers I could put in my community tank correct? puffers must be solo?

GSPs get to 6 inches. A 30 gallon would be a good home. I've never kept one so my experience with them is zero.

As for puffers in a community, well that's always the big question. Depends on the individual puffer and what the tankmates are. Fish with long fins are a bad idea. As is anything that could outcompete the puffer for food. Otos seem to be fairly compatible with dwarf puffers. Mine live with ghost shrimp, at least until I net out the shrimp and give them to my arrowhead :) The shrimp are actually stealing snails from the puffers so they have to go.

Puffers are not community fish. Sometimes, some puffers will coexist with tankmates. Sometimes, in the proper setup, some puffers will coexist with conspecifics. But do not count on either of those options working ar all, much less long term. Dwarf puffers generally will accept Otos, many will accept shrimp (but not all by any means), most will coexist with conspecifics with the right sex ratios.

Puffers are highly specialized fish requiring specialized care and diets. If you are not willing to devote a proper setup to the fish, don't bring them home.

well sounds like Ill be selling my 8 gallon on craigslist for a 20-30 gallon then. or ill be getting a Fang's Puffer or Red-tailed Red Eye Puffer since they seem to do well in 10 gallonish tank acording to pufferlist.com thanks for the info and the good link
