i am looking for the quietest airpump possible for my 28. I have a RENA on it now and that thing rattles. I have read a lot of reviews and people either say that the RENA is the best or that it rattles. I decided to give them a try and of course, mine has started rattling. So at this point i want to try a different brand. What others do you recommend?

i have several air pumps i don't use, they're just sitting around. got 2 whisper 60's (blue upside down dome type one with rubber feet and such silencing features) and 2 of these Azoo pumps similar to the whisper 60's but it has 2 settings (hi/lo) and is also quiet, as well as designed for hanging since hanging it would pretty much stop any noise coming from vibrations going through a table or such.
you can have any number of them for $6 a pop plus shipping. PM me if you're interested.

Well, its hard to find a *silent* air pump, as they vary A LOT, even within the same product line.

I have 3 rena 400's, and each is a different loudness. My 2 home ones are incredibly loud, while the 3rd is so silent, I can barely hear it.

However, I found that there are some simple ways to dampen their sound. Like, hanging them as somebody mentioned. I personlly found that setting them on some thick, soft, sponge also worked. As for the other sounds, putting them inside a wooden box did the trick for me.

I also have a Whisper. You can't hear it.

be cautious about putting the pumps onto rags or sponges, as some of them have their intakes on the bottom side of the unit, so you don't want to stifle that.

Clawlan:

I hope that I can provide some input based on experience and the input will be limited as I do not have the experience in order to understand "my 28".

IMHO, I would not buy a "high end" air pump such as the SL-65 described at:
http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_AquariumPage~PageAlias~air_pumps_coralife_luft_pump.html
Although the vendor's literature indicates that it is quite this is a joke and I tried several kludges to reduce the noise with no joy (it is now in my garage for a backup).

I have had very good luck with the AP7215 set forth at:
http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_AquariumPage~PageAlias~air_pumps_aquarium_pharmaceuticals_rena.html

This pump provides:

1) aesthetic air bubbles to my 110G main tank which also induce a mild turbulence on the water's surface;

2) significant aeration of the biological media in the 1st chamber (approximately 15G) of my main tank sump;

3) turbulent aeration of the mechanical and biological filtration media in the 2nd chamber (approximately 15G) of my main tank sump and

4) mild turbulence on the surface of two 5G tanks.

This pump produces virtually no noise.
