I had this weekend the need to euthanize a sick fish.

I searched a lot and finally got the clove oil. I went home, poured some in a plastic jar, added water streight from the tap, stir it and went with the killing mixture to my hospital tank.

I took the net, to catch the gourami. Man, he was strangely overscared. He started dashing from ons side to then other and when he was trapped in a corner, he jumped out of the tank and fell to the floor.

I picked him up (swallowing hard by this point) and let it fall in the clove oil water. I started watching until the fish started to look calm. I thought it was working but after 3-4 minutes he started swimming as much as he could in this small container. I left him there (with the pain in my heart) for a little more. After a while, I returned and he was calm, but awake and normal. Then. I took the desicion of adding some more clove to the water. Nothing seemed to happen.

I sat in front of the Tv, and after maybe half an hour, I remeberd the fish. I went to where he was and saw him desperate, gasping air like crazy, trying to get out of the water. Oh boy, this scene was really (fish level) crude.

I took the net, trapped him and returned him to the 10 gl. hospital tank. He was acting like that from about 10 minutes until he calmed down again and started swimming normal.

That was friday night. Today he is still alive, with his body full of red marks bacause of the septicemia, but he won't give up. He swims good, even against the filter current. Comes up for air like any other gourami, but is not eating. I saw some traces of saprolegnia but he fought them and is now clean. I'm keeping him well filtrated, under eritrhomicyn treatment, at 80ºF.

I'm feeling really bad for him, but I see I will have not the courage to try to euthanize him again. And i also have another dilemma: if he ever recovers from the infection, and looks healthy, I don't know if I could dare to sent him back the the main tank.

Dunno what to do.

I'm terribly sorry for your bad experience. Euthanization is not an easy task for most folks, and not one that anyone should enjoy.

a few questions come to mind.
How much Clove oil in how much Water. Adding more once the fish is in would be inneffective given that the clove oil needs to be mixed very well. It almost sounds as if you just had enough clove oil to calm the fish down initially and not enough to finish the job.

I'm thinking about the dissolve issue, and perhaps i was not really using clove oil. What I got was a substance called (literrally translated) "clove spirit", and it was not oily at all. It dissolved pretty quickly and quite even. The water took a tan like color, and smelled (and tasted) like a denstist office.

hmmmmmm..... do you think you can find or post a pic of it, Pato? Being a new user of the clove oil myself, I wondered the same as Dave... whether you used enough..... nut then you mention this Clove spirit..... I'm wondering if it was the same stuff at all....

Doll, The product I used is made here in Costa Rica, so I can't really think you'll find the same presentation where you live. I got a 2oz. plastic bottle, labeled "Espíritu de Clavo". The product itself is a brown non oily substance that smells and tastes like when you go to the denstist.

What did you discover about using alka-seltzer as a euthanasia method? Seems like C02 poisoning would be a pretty quick, easy way to go.

hmmm..... well Pato, when I went looking for the stuff in the store, there were 2 types of toothache medicine. this, which was the right stuff and contained 85% Eugenol:

Red Cross Toothache Relief
Red Cross Toothache Medicine helps to stop the pain caused by a cavity until a dentist can be seen. The kit comes with a relief agent: Eugenol, tweezers, and cotton pellets. Eugenol is a local antiseptic and analgesic.

or this which was incorrect:
Orajel® Regular Strength Gel Product Label

Drug Facts
Active ingredients Purpose

Benzocaine 10%................................................................................. Oral Pain Reliever

I have to quote that the product I used is sold in macrobiotic shops, instead of regular drug stores. Everytime I asked for eugenol, nobady new. Clove oil, nothing. Something for a toothache? Benzocaine.

I will try ordering it online. I was looking for it, and came with a funny surprise atr amazon. I started a thread about that in General Chit chat.

Thanks Doll. thet link is superb. Click it again and look below for a toothpaste that is "good for morning breath".
