Model shipwreck in tank?

I am a model builder too and the "mold-release" agents they use on the plastic are toxic. I would buy something that is aquarium safe and not a plastic model.

yeah, I figured that, and basically what i need is an old style ship, like 1500's looking, 100% wood, and a safe glue. No paint, no sails, nothing fancy like that, but I just think it would be cool to have an actual wooden ship, and watch it rot and the fish play in it, and stuff grow on it etc, When I say model i mean something wooden that looks like a ship, not a plastic model.

just figured maybe someone had done this before or knew where I could get something like that

I know it's not totally real looking but it is very nice in my tank. I got it from www.bigalsonline.com here is what it looks like in...

unless you seal the wood completely it will turn black and just rot away-Anne

and are they're sealers that I can safely use? or how long would it take to rot away? if it took a couple years, that would be acceptable....

If you are totally stuck on putting a "foreign" object in, I would epoxy the whole thing first. Put on a couple coats at a minimum. This will make it the most "aquarium safe" - not cheap though. I have used epoxy to seal objects with out problems before - mainly for vivarium tanks. This will be alot of work but will seal it well - if you get everything that is.

As for wood - if you seal it, it should be fine because the expoxy will not allow water to reach the wood - thus rotting it.

Overall, I would not put a model ship wreck in my tank. I was leary about epoxing pvc and foam insulation but that seems to work.

GOod luck

Hi Aries, what kind of epoxy did you use to make the object aquarium safe?
We had put some 2 inch Lord of The Ring figures in the tank but some fish died so we removed them. I heard there's some type of silicone spray for electronics.Ever hear of anything thing like that for fishkeepers?
Thanks.
