Hi all. I've been lurking here absorbing the info for a while, and now I finally have my own sorta dilemma.
I have a pair of Kribs in a 20g planted, just them and about 6 or so snails. The Kribs recently spawned, and brought the babies out of the cave a week ago. I counted 47 of them. One big happy family strolling around the tank all day.:headbang2:
Next day, Mama starts killing off my snails. I figure she's just feeding the babies, no big deal. She has now killed all of them, and I have seen her picking off the babies now in the past 2 days, there are 11 left, and Daddy Krib is confined to the top of the tank under the lip of my HOB. Just tonight, i turn off the tank light and sit to watch, and mama goes straight up to the top and attacks dad, then goes down and sucks up a baby and it never comes back out. Dad is now zooming frantic around the tank to get away from the psycho ol lady, and Ihave no other tank to move the poor guy to.\
I do 20-25% wc's every Sunday, and have been watching my levels, and as of now they are 0,0, .5. Does anyone know what could be going on with her?Thank you all for any help and advice.

If your fry are free-swimming, you can move them to another tank. A 5g will do it temporarily. A 10 gallons located on the floor for awhile if no problems can be seen will be fine for the male krib or exchange the female for another one instead.

You can put a partition in your tank to prevent the female from attacking the male. You should remove the fry from the parents care if you want to raise them all.A 5g tank should suffice for the fry. Also take care that you feed the pair well.

Heya,

I actually have had a few pairs of breeder kribs and had this happen once, its best to remove the female from the tank and let the daddy raise the fry, he will do this. Him cowering in the corner means she has turned on him as well. I dont know why the females sometimes do this, but I had my original female after many great spawns attack the daddy and kill him. I found another male for her to try out and they are doing very well together now..

Good luck!

P.S. An established tank is best for the fry, as they will eat off the biobugs and other good stuff in that tank. As you said their are no other fish in the tank, so removing the mother and then if dad doesnt pick up taking care of the fry removing him is what I would recommend.

Thanks for the replies everyone.Unfortunately, I am too late in saving the male. I took the fry out and put them in a 1g I had in the shed with some of sand from the home tank. By the time I got to them, there were only 7 left. :irked:
My male, the poor thing, didn't survive the 30 minutes it took me to set up the gallon.
What makes the females turn like this? This pair have had 3 other spawns and have been very successful.I've also always raised the fry in the same tank with minimal issue. I'm stumped.

Hiya,

I too am sorry to hear that your male didnt make it! I dont now either what makes them do this, maybe the female isnt happy with him? I had it happen and thought id never be able to breed my female again, but found a lone male in a local petstore and brought him home, they are currently raising about 60 fry and seem very happy. You may want to try another male or start with a group of juvies if you wish to try your hand at kribs again. I have some bigger juvies if you want to try again let me know.

Be well!
