hey, do you think I might be able to cultivate a lucky bamboo shaft in my 10g tank? all I really know about them is that you must keep the leaves above the water line and avoid direct light. do they need to be grown in bunches, or can one grow fine by itself?

they will be fine with leaves above water and no direct sunlight for extended periods. One thing to keep in mind, those plants will grow massive root system so you will need a deep substrate bed to handle them. Otherwise put them in those small plastic potting cups before placing into the substrate.
You can read more here, it's a tank setup i wanted to do eventually once the current tank is finished:

Lucky bamboo is not a bamboo. it is a Dracaena spp. It can be grown in either soil on "kept alive" if the roots are in clean water. it cannot be submerged, ony emmersed. I would avoid it in my tank. Because it is not a true aquatic, it goes through periods of rot and contaminates your tank water for your fish. if you want to play around with it keep in in a vase or a moist soil in a pot, but keep it away from your tank...IME
