Lost two fish right off the bat :(

Lost another Petco neon tetra. Same way as the first one. Started shying from the school, not eating, colors not as bright, then lost all equilibrium. I scooped him out and bagged him for return. Best I can tell, I've lost 3 out of the 15. First one was porcelain expressed, 2nd is missing in action, third one in petco body bag. These poor little buggers must be mass produced and treated like feeder fish. :shakehead:

Water params are 0ppm ammo, 0ppm nitrites, 5ppm nitrates. Water temp is 78degF, lots of filtration.

That sucks! Sorry to hear that:(

Petsmart is my nemesis. There's a mom and pop store about an hour away that I never have problems with. I only go there when I want something special. In response to your Petco issue, keep pluggin' away; eventually you'll get healthy fish.

Looking at my tank today. I notice a also lost a shrimp. My olive snail never made it past the night I received it. Its time for my weekly water change tomorrow. Hopefully I don't find anymore dead bodies! I know how you feel:(

and I lost another emerald cory from Petco. :( I've only noticed 4 of them for the past day or so. Sure enough, I just noticed the somewhat eaten body of a cory hanging from a plant. :(

Tally so far: 3 of 15 neons gone. 2 of 6 corys gone.

Water parameters still good: 0ppm ammo, 0ppm nitrites, 5ppm nitrates. Water temp is 78F. All remaining fish look happy and healthy.

It must be bad stock because your water parameters are perfect. Also i do agree that neons are probably treated just as bad as feeders because they always have to order more and more as people buy them for their colors and size so the store just gets them from where ever they can. Im sorry for your losses. I was lucky enough to get a good stock of neons as i only loss one the way you described. Shy, not eating, and equilibrum issues

I added a school of neons to my tank (cycled for about 10 months) and lost about 4 in 24 hours, then started slowly losing them one by one over the past few weeks, now I only have one. I bought them at a big box pet store during a $1 per fish sale... That's my experience with neon tetras

That's about the rate I'm going Patrick!

I went from 21 to 16 in 4 days.

I am returning the dead ones I have, along with a water sample tomorrow. We'll see how that goes. I'll take a cash refund if possible.

You could posibbly try a hardier schooling fish such as bloodfin tetras.

I've had a great experience with blackskirt tetras in my larger tank, I would recommend them also

I actually moved my school of 5 blood-fins from my 10gal to the 29. They're very happy hanging out with the remaining neons and look much happier in there than they did in the 10gal w/ the betta. Blood-fins are great fish.
